嘯 來 了 , 所 有 人 都 及 時 躲 到 了 高 處 。 最 終 , 儘 管 村 莊 被 毀 ,
但 沒 有 人 喪 生 。
也 許 是 這 段 童 年 的 危 難 經 歷 讓 Pilipo 萌 生 了 要 保 護 自 己
家 園 的 想 法 , 他 長 大 後 參 了 軍 , 這 也 是 為 甚 麼 他 身 上 有 一 種

It was the local women washing clothes in the still water
of the Halawa Valley who first noticed that something was
amiss. Everyone made their way to higher ground in time,
and although the village was decimated, no lives were lost.
Pilipo projects an aura of strength — I can see his years
as a U.S. military man in his bearing, and the force of
the deep culture he embodies also seems to emanate from
him. Yet his manner is unassuming.
He touches his nose to mine and we both inhale, a
greeting that represents a sharing of spirit between two
people. I feel a strong connection to this timeless ritual.
It’s called honi, or “sharing breath,” Pilipo says.
One of his six children, Gregory Kawaimaka Solatario,
has taken on the role of the family’s cultural practitioner,
just as Solatario had. Gregory shows us how to make poi
from Hawaiian taro plants, crushing them with a pestle.
This porridge-like dish is a traditional staple, and its
consistency is measured in “fingers” — if it’s thick and
takes only one finger to scoop out a mouthful, it’s onefinger
poi, if it’s thin and takes three fingers to scoop out a
mouthful, it’s three-finger poi.
The Solatorios are representative of the relatively untouched
culture of Molokai, a culture deeply inspired by the natural
environment, which flows through its song and dance.
