有 人 的 實 際 生 活 和 切 身 利 益 , 關 注 政 治 本 應 是 件 理 所 當 然 的 事 。
而 且 大 多 數 情 況 下 , 政 治 也 並 非 是 正 邪 大 戰 , 更 多 是 具 有 共 同 目
標 的 人 , 為 了 實 現 目 標 該 採 取 怎 樣 的 途 徑 和 方 式 而 發 生 的 爭 論 。 不
過 ,Caylan 也 承 認 她 所 說 的 這 些 並 非 適 用 所 有 政 治 , 在 某 些 情 況
下 , 政 治 也 確 實 會 成 為 某 些 邪 惡 的 幫 兇 。
「 我 一 生 中 的 大 部 份 時 間 都 在 關 注 政 治 上 的 邪 惡 。」Caylan 說
她 十 歲 時 讀 過 一 本 書 , 講 述 了 一 個 生 活 在 德 國 納 粹 統 治 時 期 的 男 孩

二 戰 德 國 納 粹 法 西 斯 政 權 , 開 始 引 申 關 注 起 共 產 主 義 在 全 世 界 的
影 響 。 法 西 斯 一 詞 始 於 古 羅 馬 時 期 , 強 調 一 黨 專 政 , 對 外 漸 進 式 侵
略 , 對 內 獨 裁 專 制 , 破 壞 言 論 自 由 、 新 聞 自 由 、 司 法 獨 立 等 , 缺 乏 權
力 制 衡 。 也 許 二 戰 後 西 方 社 會 普 遍 認 為 , 德 國 戰 敗 , 法 西 斯 已 被 打
入 了 無 底 深 淵 , 再 不 會 興 風 作 浪 。 而 事 實 是 , 以 中 國 共 產 黨 為 代 表
的 新 法 西 斯 正 迅 速 成 長 壯 大 , 並 在 不 知 不 覺 中 將 影 響 輻 射 至 全 球 。
Caylan 並 不 贊 成 西 方 政 府 在 面 對 中 共 政 權 時 , 因 經 濟 利 益 而
普 遍 採 取 的 綏 靖 態 度 。「 中 共 不 是 一 個 投 桃 報 李 的 黨 派 。 西 方 常 見
的 錯 誤 想 法 是 , 只 要 與 中 共 保 持 接 觸 , 它 們 會 自 行 借 鑒 西 方 的 政
體 模 式 , 做 出 改 變 。 實 際 情 況 則 可 能 恰 恰 相 反 , 中 共 滲 透 腐 蝕 和 有
意 的 思 想 輸 出 , 正 在 改 變 西 方 的 自 由 和 民 主 。」 在 Caylan 眼 中 , 中
共 執 政 以 來 從 未 停 止 對 自 己 人 民 的 迫 害 , 尤 其 對 提 出 反 對 意 見 和
持 有 不 同 意 識 形 態 的 人 格 外 殘 酷 。
就 在 去 年 ,Caylan 受 邀 參 與 了 一 部 紀 錄 片 的 製 作 。 這 部 名 為
《 來 自 馬 三 家 的 信 》 的 影 片 , 講 述 了 一 位 中 國 工 程 師 孫 毅 , 因 修
煉 法 輪 功 被 關 押 進 勞 教 所 , 並 在 其 中 遭 受 非 人 酷 刑 折 磨 的 經 歷 。
他 冒 死 將 自 己 的 遭 遇 和 所 見 所 聞 寫 成 了 一 封 信 , 並 放 入 了 在 勞 教
所 中 他 製 作 的 出 口 至 美 國 的 商 品 中 。 其 中 一 封 信 被 美 國 俄 勒 岡 州
的 一 位 女 士 發 現 了 並 曝 光 給 媒 體 。
「 孫 毅 打 動 我 的 一 個 原 因 是 , 他 做 的 事 情 是 真 正 勇 敢 者 的 行
為 。」Caylan 感 慨 地 說 :「 在 加 拿 大 也 有 法 輪 功 修 煉 者 , 他 們 是 佛
家 功 法 , 以 真 、 善 、 忍 為 宗 旨 , 是 一 個 平 和 善 良 的 群 體 。 孫 毅 是 一
名 工 程 師 ,1999 年 中 共 開 始 打 壓 法 輪 功 時 , 他 才 剛 結 婚 , 本 來 生 活
應 該 是 美 好 幸 福 的 。 可 他 卻 陸 續 被 捕 了 十 次 , 被 酷 刑 折 磨 , 九 死 一
生 , 這 一 切 僅 僅 是 因 為 他 堅 持 自 己 的 信 仰 。」
令 Caylan 尤 為 感 動 的 是 , 面 對 著 殘 酷 迫 害 甚 至 生 命 威 脅 , 孫
毅 從 未 放 棄 自 己 的 信 念 。「 影 片 中 的 大 部 份 鏡 頭 , 都 是 他 自 己 在 中
國 偷 偷 拍 攝 , 並 經 網 絡 傳 遞 到 海 外 的 , 這 是 極 度 危 險 的 事 , 我 真 不
敢 相 信 他 們 居 然 能 拍 攝 出 這 樣 一 部 紀 錄 片 。」《 來 自 馬 三 家 的 信 》
入 圍 了 2019 年 的 奧 斯 卡 紀 錄 片 競 賽 單 元 ,Caylan 衷 心 希 望 藉 此 會 有
更 多 人 來 關 注 這 部 影 片 , 並 了 解 遠 在 地 球 另 一 端 發 生 的 悲 劇 。
繁 忙 的 工 作 之 餘 ,Caylan 還 組 建 了 幸 福 的 家 庭 , 她 和 丈 夫 育
有 兩 個 可 愛 的 孩 子 , 一 個 三 歲 , 一 個 才 只 有 一 歲 。 可 能 在 許 多 人 眼
中 , 這 也 是 她 屬 於 典 型 保 守 派 的 證 明 之 一 。 即 便 是 女 權 主 義 大 行

此 , 我 們 對 任 何 改 變 傳 統 的 做 法 都 應 持 一 點 謹 慎 的 態 度 , 應 該 更
尊 重 這 些 寶 貴 的 遺 產 。 我 覺 得 這 正 是 當 下 的 某 些 政 治 精 英 和 集 權
統 治 者 所 缺 乏 的 , 他 們 盲 目 假 設 自 己 無 所 不 知 、 無 所 不 能 , 沉 浸 在
重 塑 社 會 、 改 變 人 類 的 所 謂 偉 大 願 景 中 。 卻 缺 乏 對 他 人 , 尤 其 是 歷
史 經 驗 教 訓 的 責 任 感 和 尊 重 。」
But sometimes politics is about good versus
evil. “I have spent most of my life concerned
with political evil,” she says. When she was 10
years old, she read a book about a boy in Nazi
Germany. It struck her how otherwise normal,
civilized people can think they’re doing good
while committing atrocities. She later became
interested in how this plays out in communist
regimes as well.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is a
power that concerns her.
Relations between Canada and China are especially
strained right now. In December, Canada
detained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial
officer of the Chinese telecommunications company
Huawei, on a U.S. warrant. Meng faces
criminal fraud charges.
China has since detained two Canadian citizens,
apparently in retaliation and without cause,
according to Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia
Freeland. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also
said China arbitrarily sentenced to death a Canadian
man who was being held on charges of drug
smuggling.
Ford’s advice at this potentially critical moment
in Canada-China relations is to not capitulate to
the CCP.
“It’s not a party that reciprocates when you make
concessions,” she says. A common misconception
in the West, she says, is that engagement with
China could make China more democratic
over time. Many people never considered that
the opposite could be true, she says — that the
influence of China could make the West less free
and democratic.
Surveillance and security is a big concern in relation
to Huawei, leading some governments in the
West to ban, or consider banning, Huawei telecommunications
equipment. The concern is that
Huawei could hand over data from telecommunications
to the Chinese regime. Frank Cilluffo
and Sharon Cardash at Auburn University in
Alabama wrote in an article for The Conversation,
“No Chinese company is fully independent of its
government, which reserves the right to require
companies to assist with intelligence gathering.”
Ford says China has a lot of leverage now;
it’s become a superpower with the help of trade
agreements with the West. She differentiates
between the CCP and China itself, full of many

evil. One is respect for truth. … The second is
decency or compassion.”
good people and with a rich, ancient culture that
has always captivated her.
The documentary she co-wrote, Letter from
Masanjia, chronicles the story of a Chinese dissident
who left a message in a package of Halloween
decorations made in a Chinese labour camp where
he was a prisoner of conscience. A woman in
Oregon found the letter, in which he pleaded for
help — he was jailed for his belief in the spiritual
practice Falun Dafa, and subjected to torture and
brainwashing tactics.
“One of the things about Sun Yi that struck me was
that this is a guy who did really heroic things,” Ford
says. Since the persecution of Falun Dafa began in
1999, he was arrested ten times. “He was an engineer,
he was just married when the persecution started,
Ford with 3-year-old Everen, the eldest of her two daughters.
and his life was just one tragedy after another. Even
when he was being tortured so badly, he never gave
in. He wrote these notes surreptitiously, knowing
that if he was caught, he could be killed.”
Throughout her career and through her study of
authoritarian regimes, Ford has come to realize,
“There are two great bulwarks against political evil.
One is respect for truth. That requires, on the one
hand, a cultivated capacity for moral and intellectual
discernment to try to understand what the truth is.
And then the courage to give expression to your
thoughts.”
Totalitarian regimes cow people into saying
things they don’t believe, she says. “The second
is decency or compassion. You treat all people as
though they’re endowed with inherent dignity.”
