began when she was a child growing up in
Calgary, Alberta. “I was a 7-year-old vegetarian —
I was a weird kid — and I was concerned about the
loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity. So I wrote
to my Member of Parliament, who was Preston
Manning,” she says.
She asked Manning to help preserve the habitat
of the swift fox, and she included a drawing of a
fox with her letter. Last year, at the age of 31, after
years of high-level policy work, she sat down with
Preston Manning to have a good talk.
It was one of a few conversations Ford had with
Alberta conservatives that led her to run for
office in the provincial legislature this year. These
conversations touched on various topics, including
political philosophy and the freedom she would have
as a United Conservative Party member to express
diverse opinions rather than be strictly partisan.
