Into Antarctica’s
‘White Darkness’
A place of peril and sublime beauty, Antarctica consistently
calls to humanity’s most adventurous souls.
為 地 球 上 最 人 跡 罕 至 的 一 片 土 地 , 南 極 洲 在 絕 大 多 數
作 人 眼 中 都 是 遙 遠 而 又 神 秘 的 。 我 在 到 達 這 裏 時 , 也 感
到 了 些 許 的 不 安 和 緊 張 , 那 茫 茫 的 冰 原 , 泛 著 青 銅 色 、 藍 綠
色 和 銀 白 色 , 處 處 在 提 醒 我 們 , 這 是 一 個 不 適 宜 人 類 居 住 的
地 方 , 我 們 這 些 自 大 的 人 類 在 此 地 一 定 要 謙 卑 謹 慎 , 否 則 那
冷 酷 的 風 暴 和 極 寒 隨 時 會 奪 去 我 們 的 性 命 。
我 聽 到 耳 邊 響 起 一 種 類 似 電 影 中 巨 獸 頭 骨 裂 開 的 聲 音 ,
腳 步 不 禁 放 緩 下 來 , 警 惕 地 張 望 。 同 行 的 人 連 忙 告 訴 我 , 這 是

Amidst Antarctica’s whiteness are gunmetal grey seas,
silver and turquoise glaciers, and black mountains.
These aren’t the hues of humanity, but of warning. Don’t
take a wrong step. Don’t let in the blizzard’s chill. I hear
ice floes cracking like ancient bones.
Antarctica remains, as the author David Grann so
well defined it, a “white darkness.” Indeed, to me it
seems danger and darkness lay at the heart of its glacial
