雖 說 人 跡 罕 至 , 南 極 洲 卻 並 非 沒 有 生 命 的 跡 象 。 事
實 上 , 因 為 沒 有 人 類 的 打 擾 , 這 裏 的 野 生 動 物 們 似 乎 活
得 格 外 愜 意 , 有 種 此 地 我 是 主 人 的 「 霸 氣 」, 例 如 : 舉
世 聞 名 的 胖 乎 乎 企 鵝 。 據 科 學 家 研 究 統 計 , 南 極 洲 生 活
著 三 千 多 萬 隻 , 十 幾 種 企 鵝 , 我 們 一 路 上 就 看 到 了 好 幾
種 。 帶 著 白 色 「 帽 子 」 和 尾 巴 長 一 些 的 巴 布 亞 企 鵝 ; 畫
著 時 尚 白 色 「 眼 線 」 的 阿 德 利 企 鵝 ; 還 有 腿 格 外 粗 短 ,
下 顎 有 一 條 黑 線 , 看 上 去 有 些 滑 稽 的 帽 帶 企 鵝 。 此 外 ,
我 也 有 幸 目 睹 了 追 逐 魚 群 的 海 豹 , 展 開 翅 膀 足 有 六 呎 的
信 天 翁 , 以 及 珍 稀 的 逆 戟 鯨 和 小 鬚 鯨 。
與 人 類 會 對 陌 生 的 事 物 和 環 境 感 到 惶 恐 不 同 , 這
些 動 物 對 我 們 外 來 客 更 多 的 是 好 奇 和 無 視 , 大 概 它 們
知 道 我 們 沒 能 力 在 這 片 冰 天 雪 地 裏 久 留 。 不 過 , 我 在
Deception 島 上 似 乎 冒 犯 了 一 隻 巴 布 亞 企 鵝 , 它 有 些 怒
氣 衝 衝 地 盯 著 我 , 喉 嚨 裏 發 出 咯 咯 咕 咕 的 聲 音 , 像 是 一
位 被 淘 氣 孩 子 打 擾 了 午 睡 的 老 人 。 我 們 是 從 一 個 陡 峭 的
峽 谷 航 行 進 這 座 島 嶼 的 , 當 中 的 航 道 大 約 有 660 呎 寬 ,
被 稱 作 「 海 神 的 風 箱 」, 因 為 寒 風 呼 嘯 過 這 裏 會 發 出 嗚
嗚 的 聲 音 。 導 遊 介 紹 說 ,Deception 島 其 實 是 一 個 火 山
口 , 而 且 還 是 一 座 活 火 山 , 這 讓 我 們 有 種 身 處 冰 火 兩 重
天 的 感 覺 。
Deception 島 的 中 心 , 也 就 是 火 山 口 , 叫 做 捕 鯨
灣 , 至 今 還 有 一 座 建 於 1912 年 的 廢 棄 捕 鯨 站 。 據 說 到 上
世 紀 三 十 年 代 , 這 一 地 區 的 鯨 魚 幾 乎 被 捕 殺 殆 盡 。 看
來 人 類 與 南 極 洲 僅 有 的 擦 肩 而 過 , 也 沒 留 下 甚 麼 美 好
回 憶 。 如 今 的 捕 鯨 灣 非 常 安 靜 , 像 是 一 片 供 人 祭 奠 當 年
血 腥 殺 戮 的 墓 地 。 大 家 走 下 氣 艇 , 踩 在 了 岸 邊 的 黑 沙 灘
中 。 這 裏 之 所 以 沒 有 冰 雪 覆 蓋 , 是 因 為 地 底 的 岩 漿 在 持
續 散 發 出 熱 量 , 地 面 上 還 有 絲 絲 蒸 汽 繚 繞 著 , 這 裏 應 該
是 南 極 洲 少 數 觀 賞 不 到 冰 雪 景 觀 的 地 方 。 在 導 遊 的 慫 恿
Each day is different, as each island is different.
But there is one thread that ties them together — the
cheerful tumult of wildlife.
Though it is true that no humans live permanently
on the Antarctic islands or continent, it is also true
that no one is exactly alone when visiting Antarctica.
It is said that 30 million penguins live there — we
see gentoo penguins with their white “bonnets” and
extra-long tails, Adèlies with their white-ringed eyes,
and chinstraps with their white “chinstraps” and extra
stumpy legs. We see fur seals, along with crabeater,
Weddell, and leopard seals. We see albatrosses with
six-foot wingspans — one even landed fairly close to
me on the railing of the Midnatsol — and many orca
and minke whales.
The animals seem to have little fear of humans. It’s
as though they view us with passing interest, knowing
we fragile creatures won’t linger long in the bitter
cold. My first penguin encounter is with a gentoo on
Deception Island, and he seems to chide me like a
grumpy old man.
We approach the island through a 660-footwide
passage between rock walls. The pass is called
Neptune’s Bellows, named for the whistling winds
that howl through it. Deception Island is a caldera;
it’s a ring of rock surrounding the flooded centre of a
partially collapsed volcano, which is still active.
In its centre, called Whalers Bay, we approach the
shore where there’s an abandoned whaling station
that was built in 1912. Humankind didn’t always
