Der promovierte Kunsthistoriker Christian Bauer war Geschäftsführer der Kunstmeile Krems und ist Autor mehrerer Bücher über Egon<br />
Schiele. Seit 2014 leitet Christian Bauer die Landesgalerie Niederösterreich.<br />
Christian Bauer obtained his PhD in art history, acted as the general director of the Kunstmeile Krems and is also the author of several books on Egon<br />
Schiele. Christian Bauer has been heading the State Gallery of Lower Austria since 2014.<br />
Für welche Werke lohnt es sich, den Weg in die Landesgalerie<br />

Die mit Spannung erwartete Eröffnung des<br />
spektakulären Museumsneubaus der Landesgalerie<br />
Niederösterreich von marte.marte<br />
Architekten ist soeben über die Bühne gegangen.<br />
Seit Ende Mai <strong>2019</strong> hat das neue architektonische<br />
Wahrzeichen der Kunstmeile Krems seinen regulären<br />
Ausstellungsbetrieb aufgenommen: Auf 3.000 m 2<br />
Ausstellungsfläche und fünf Ebenen werden in<br />
wechselnden Konstellationen die Schätze der Landessammlungen<br />
Niederösterreich in Verbindung<br />
mit wichtigen Privatkollektionen – darunter jene<br />
von Ernst Ploil und Helmut Zambo – präsentiert.<br />
Der Sammlungsschwerpunkt erstreckt sich dabei<br />
von der Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zu herausragenden<br />
Werken der Gegenwartskunst.<br />
The highly anticipated opening of the spectacular<br />
State Gallery of Lower Austria, designed<br />
by marte.marte Architekten, has finally<br />
taken place. Since the end of May <strong>2019</strong>, the<br />
new architectural landmark on the “Kunstmeile<br />
Krems” has been fully operational. Across an exhibition<br />
space of 3,000 m 2 and on five separate<br />
floors, alternating exhibitions will be presenting<br />
the various treasures of Lower Austria’s state collection<br />
along with key private collections – among<br />
them, also those of Ernst Ploil and Helmut Zambo.<br />
The focus will range from 19 th century works<br />
all the way to exceptional pieces from the contemporary<br />
art world.<br />

Sie verzichten im neuen Museum auf Dauerpräsentationen<br />
und zeigen die Sammlungen in wechselnden Themenausstellungen<br />
...<br />
Wir machen Themenausstellungen auf eine zeitgemäße Art: Die<br />
Dinge in Fluktuation bringen, sie immer wieder in neue<br />
Zusammenhänge stellen. So stellen wir etwa mit der Ausstellung<br />
„Ich bin alles zugleich – Selbstdarstellung von Schiele bis heute“<br />
die Frage: Wer bin ich eigentlich? Dieser Zugang kann die<br />
Menschen viel stärker erreichen als wenn man sagt, ich schaue<br />
mir einfach Bilder an.<br />
Wie unterscheidet sich die Landesgalerie Niederösterreich<br />
programmatisch von der benachbarten Kunsthalle Krems?<br />
Die Kunsthalle Krems hat einen Fokus auf reine Internationalität<br />
und auf die Gegenwart.<br />
Bei uns ist es so, dass jedes Projekt, das hier gezeigt wird, mit<br />
Krems, mit Niederösterreich, zu tun hat. Das heißt: Es wird eine<br />
Geschichte erzählt, die auch eine Geschichte des Ortes ist, wo das<br />
Museum steht. Diese Verortung kann jedoch in die ganze Welt<br />
ausstrahlen. Das ist uns ganz wichtig.<br />
Sie starten mit den fünf aktuellen Ausstellungen sehr<br />
ambitioniert – wie wollen Sie diesen hohen Anspruch auf<br />
Dauer halten?<br />
Auf hohem Niveau zu starten bringt die Herausforderung mit sich,<br />
uns ständig zu verbessern: neue Werke, neue Sammlerpersönlichkeiten<br />
gewinnen, neue Themen finden. Dann kann man langfristig<br />
ein funktionierendes Gesamtkonzept etablieren.<br />
You are avoiding lengthy presentations at the new museum<br />
and are instead opting for alternating, topic-based exhibitions.<br />
We are doing topic-based exhibitions in a contemporary way. By<br />
bringing things into fluctuation, we create new relationships and<br />
connections. With our exhibition “I Am Everything at Once – Self-<br />
Representation from Schiele to Today”, for example, we ask the<br />
question: Who am I really? An approach like this can reach people<br />
much more effectively rather than simply saying that you will be<br />
looking at a few pictures.<br />
How does the State Gallery of Lower Austria differentiate itself<br />
from the neighbouring Kunsthalle Krems in terms of its<br />
programme?<br />
The focus of the Kunsthalle Krems lies on internationality and the<br />
present. When it comes to us, then every project displayed here has<br />
got something to do with Krems and with Lower Austria. This<br />
means: The history being told here is also the history of the town in<br />
which the museum resides. This local focus can, however, radiate<br />
across the whole world. That’s very important to us.<br />
Your five current exhibitions are very ambitious – how do you<br />
plan on maintaining this standard in the long run?<br />
Setting the bar high brings along the challenge of continuously<br />
having to improve oneself – regularly adding new works of art,<br />
bringing new collectors on board, discovering new topics. In that<br />
way, one can create a well-functional long-term concept.<br />
Which works of art in particular make a visit to the State<br />
Gallery of Lower Austria interesting?<br />
Right now, we’ve got the central works of Renate Bertlmann on<br />
display. She will be representing Austria at this year’s Venice<br />
Biennale. In the exhibition “Franz Haufer. Self-Made Man and<br />
Contemporary Art Collector”, we’re showcasing brilliant works by<br />
Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, as well as equally brilliant major<br />
works by countless additional artists!<br />
