des Kirchner Museums Davos. Seit September 2018 leitet
Thorsten Sadowsky das Museum der Moderne Salzburg.

Was hat Sie gereizt, nach Salzburg zu kommen?
Das Museum der Moderne Salzburg gehört zu
den bedeutendsten österreichischen Museen für die
Kunst der Moderne und der Gegenwart. Ein solches
Haus leiten zu dürfen, ist ein großes Privileg. Für
eine Stadt mit etwa 150.000 Einwohnern hat Salzburg
eine kulturelle Vielfalt und Qualität zu bieten,
die einzigartig ist. Nicht nur im Bereich der Musik
und der darstellenden Künste – Salzburg verfügt
auch über eine bedeutende Museumslandschaft, eine
lebendige Kunstszene und wichtige Galerien. Der
Dialog zwischen den Künsten ist hier beispiellos.
Welchen Fokus möchten Sie längerfristig mit dem Museum
der Moderne Salzburg verfolgen?
Der kunstgeschichtliche Kanon des 20. Jahrhunderts
und die zeitgenössische Kunst gehören für
mich zusammen, da die Gegenwart ohne Kenntnis
der Vergangenheit Gefahr läuft, zur Dauerschleife zu
werden. Kritik und Sinnlichkeit, Unterhaltung und
Verstörung, Erinnerung und Zukunft müssen sich
nicht ausschließen. In meiner Vision entfaltet sich
im Museum der Moderne Salzburg ein breites Spektrum
von Ausstellungen, das von Positionen der
klassischen Moderne über Konzeptkunst, Licht- und
Klangkunst bis hin zur Medienkunst und zu aktuellen
Positionen außereuropäischer Kunst reicht.
Das Museum der Moderne Salzburg bespielt neben dem

Mönchsberg auch das Rupertinum, zwei sehr unterschiedliche
Standorte ...
Das Rupertinum ist aufgrund seiner baulichen
Bedingungen sicherlich kein Ort für raumgreifende
Installationen, doch gleichzeitig sind viele Künstler
von der frühbarocken Architektur und der kleinteiligen
Raumfolge fasziniert. Ich halte die Verbindung
von Stadt und Berg, die durch die beiden Standorte
verkörpert wird, für ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal.
Allerdings muss das Rupertinum im Stadtraum
sichtbarer werden. Daran arbeiten wir zurzeit.
Zum Haus gehört auch die Fotosammlung des Bundes.
Ich sehe Salzburg absolut als Hotspot für österreichische
und internationale Fotografie. Wenn Sie sich
das Ausstellungsprogramm der letzten Jahre anschauen
ist unübersehbar, dass das Museum der Moderne
Salzburg sich schon seit langem zu einem
Kompetenzzentrum für Fotografie entwickelt hat.
Ebenso ist die Sammlung der Generali Foundation seit
2014 beim Museum der Moderne Salzburg.
Wir werden die Sammlung der Generali Foundation
im Rahmen von Themenausstellungen immer
wieder neu befragen. Die Sammlungen sind das
Herzstück des Museums und deshalb besteht die kuratorische
Herausforderung in der Entwicklung von
guten Ideen, um die Bedeutung von beispielsweise
Konzept- und Medienkunst anschaulich zu machen.
Unser Anspruch ist, das Publikum mit jeder Ausstellung
neu herauszufordern und zu überraschen.
What motivated you to come to Salzburg?
The Museum der Moderne Salzburg is a renowned
and internationally respected establishment that belongs
among Austria’s most important museums for
modern and contemporary art. Being able to lead
such an institution is a great privilege. For a city with
around 150,000 inhabitants, Salzburg has to offer a
unique cultural diversity and quality and meets the
highest of standards when it comes to music and the
visual arts – the city also offers a significant number of
museums, a lively art scene and many important galleries.
The dialogue between the arts is absolutely
unique here.
What kind of focus would you like to pursue with the
Museum der Moderne Salzburg in the long term?
To me, the art history canon of the 20 th century
and contemporary art belong together, for without
knowledge and understanding of the past, the present
runs the risk of getting stuck in a perpetual loop.
Critique and sensuality, entertainment and consternation,
memory and future mustn’t necessarily exclude
one another. As far as my personal vision is
concerned, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg is a
space for a broad spectrum of exhibitions that
reaches all the way from classical Modernism to concept
art, light and sound art, media art and contemporary
non-European art.
Next to the Mönchsberg mountain, the Museum der Moderne
Salzburg is also represented at the Rupertinum, two very
different locations …
The Rupertinum is, due to its architectural conditions,
certainly not the best place for extensive installations.
Still, many artists are fascinated by the early
Baroque architecture and the smaller scope of the
space. I consider the connection between the city
and the mountain, embodied by our two locations,
as quite significant and as one of our defining characteristics.
Still, the Rupertinum needs to be rendered
more visible within the city space. We are currently
working on this.
The Austrian Federal Photography Collection is also part of
your institution.
I really view Salzburg as a hotspot for Austrian
and international photography. If you look at the exhibition
programme of the past few years, it becomes
evident that the Museum der Moderne Salzburg has
developed into a centre of photographic excellence
quite some time ago.
Since 2014, the Generali Foundation Collection has also been
with the Museum der Moderne Salzburg – how do you plan
on presenting these very exciting but also quite complex,
conceptual pieces?
We will explore the Generali Foundation Collection
over and over again as part of various themed
exhibitions and set up dialogues with the remaining
collections of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg.
The collections are the heart of our museum and that
is why there is the curatorial challenge of developing
great ideas in order to make the meaning of concept
art or media art, for example, lucid. Our aspiration is
to challenge and surprise the public all over again
with each exhibition.
