ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Helmut List studierte Maschinenbau an der
Technischen Universität Graz. 1966 trat er in die von
seinem Vater, Hans List, gegründete Firma AVL List
GmbH mit Sitz in Graz ein. Seit 1979 ist er deren
Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung und Hauptgesellschafter.
Unter seiner Führung expandierte AVL zu
einem globalen Unternehmen mit einem weltweiten
Netzwerk von Technical Centers. Gleichzeitig
erweiterte sich der Fokus vom Verbrennungsmotor
auf den gesamten Antrieb einschließlich e-Antrieb,
Hybrid, Getriebe und Batterien.
Er ist seit 1992 Honorarkonsul der Republik Korea und
war auch Initiator und Namensgeber für die Helmut-
List-Halle, eine große Veranstaltungshalle in Graz.
Helmut List studied mechanical engineering at the
Graz University of Technology. In 1966, he joined the
company AVL List GmbH, which was founded by his
father, Hans List, in Graz. Since 1979, he has been the
chairman of the board and the principal shareholder
of AVL List GmbH. Under his leadership, AVL
expanded into a global enterprise with a worldwide
network of technical centres. At the same time, the
company’s focus widened from combustion engines
to include all types of propulsion, including electric
propulsion, hybrid, transmission and batteries.
He has been Honorary Consul of the Republic of
Korea since 1992 and was also initiator and eponym
for the Helmut-List-Halle, a large event hall in Graz.

Im sehr dynamischen Umfeld der globalen
Automobilindustrie sind Forschungs-
und Entwicklungsaktivitäten
die Grundlage des Geschäftsmodells von
AVL am Headquarter in Österreich und
werden durch Impulse aus der ganzen Welt
angeregt und laufend ausgebaut. AVL beschäftigt
mehr als 10.400 Mitarbeiter (2/3
Ingenieure und Wissenschafter) auf der
ganzen Welt. Im Jahr 2018 erreichte der
Umsatz 1,75 Milliarden Euro.
Als „Home of Innovation“ bietet das
Unternehmen den Mitarbeitern ein Umfeld,
in dem kreatives Denken und Handeln
gefördert und auch das Beschreiten
neuer, unkonventioneller Wege ermöglicht
wird – mit ein Grund, warum AVL 2018
zum attraktivsten Arbeitgeber Österreichs
gewählt wurde. Ein bedeutsamer Faktor ist
die Innovationskraft der Mitarbeiter, die
dazu führt, jene wichtigen Produkte und
Leistungen zu entwickeln, die für die Kunden
interessant sind.
Vorrangiges Ziel von AVL ist es, durch
herausragende Innovationskraft sowohl
die hohen Anforderungen der Kunden als
auch jene der Gesetzgebung zu erfüllen.
Bei AVL wird genau in jenen Teams geforscht,
die die Erkenntnisse aus den F&E-
Arbeiten auch in Industrieprojekten und
AVL-Produkten umsetzen. Dadurch wird
ein rascher Transfer von der Forschung zur
Produktinnovation sichergestellt. Darüber
hinaus ist es bei der Umsetzung wesentlich,
sehr früh mit unseren Kunden wie den
Fahrzeugherstellern oder der Zulieferindustrie
zusammenzuarbeiten, um nicht
nur die Funktion, sondern auch eine rasche
Markteinführung eines neuen Produkts
sicherzustellen.
Darüber hinaus kooperiert AVL auf
globaler Basis mit universitären und industriellen
Forschungspartnern und ist in
zahlreichen forschungsnahen Institutionen
vertreten, um an zukunftsorientierten Aufgabenstellungen
zu arbeiten.
Da es nur mit umfassend ausgebildeten
Technikerinnen und Technikern möglich
ist, innovative Lösungen für die vielfältigen
Herausforderungen der Zukunft zu finden,
hat AVL die Talente-Initiative „AVL-Klasse“
an der Technischen Universität Graz
ins Leben gerufen. Im Rahmen dieser AVL
Klasse können die Brücken zwischen Universität
und Unternehmen weiter gebaut
werden. Ziele sind die stärkere Vernetzung
zwischen Studierenden und Experten der
AVL und das Heranführen an unternehmerische
Prozesse.
Die Aufwendungen von AVL für Eigen-
F&E bewegen sich im Schnitt im Bereich
von zehn Prozent des Umsatzes. Dass diese
Investitionen Früchte tragen, zeigt u.a. das
österreichische Erfindungsranking, das
AVL seit Jahren anführt und zum innovativsten
Unternehmen Österreichs erklärt.
Der stetige Kompetenzausbau von AVL
spiegelt sich in dieser großen Zahl an Patenten
wider.
Aufbauend auf den Erkenntnissen der
eigenen Forschung werden für einen weltweiten
Kundenkreis Antriebssysteme aller
Größen und Bauarten entwickelt sowie zugehörige
Simulations- und Testsysteme inklusive
Messtechnik produziert. Die Forschungs-
und Entwicklungsarbeiten von
AVL reichen von der Konzeption bis zur
Serienumsetzung. Aufgrund ihrer hohen
und vielseitigen Innovationskraft wird es
AVL auch in Zukunft gelingen, sowohl die
hohen Anforderungen der Kunden als
auch jene der Gesellschaft und damit der
Gesetzgebung zu erfüllen.

the global automotive industry, research
and development activities are
the foundation of AVL’s business model
here at the headquarters in Austria and are
regularly intensified through impulses from
across the world and continuously expanded.

Since it is only possible to find innovative
solutions for the various challenges the future
poses to us with expertly trained technicians,
AVL has called into life the “AVL
Class” talent initiative at the Graz University
of Technology. As part of the AVL Class,
bridges can continue to be built between
universities and businesses. Among the
initiative’s goals are the linking between students
and AVL experts and the introduction
to and familiarisation with business practices.
AVL spends around 10 percent of its
turnover on in-house R&D. The fact that
these investments pay off is demonstrated
by the Austrian Innovation Ranking, which
AVL has spearheaded for several years and
which has declared AVL the most innovative
company in Austria. The continued expansion
of expertise at AVL is reflected in
the large number of patents the company
holds.
Built on the insight gained from inhouse
research, AVL develops propulsion
systems of various sizes and building types
for a global customer base and manufactures
related simulation and testing systems.

AVL is the world’s largest independent company
developing, simulating and testing propulsion
solutions (hybrid, combustion engines,
transmissions, electric drives, batteries, fuel
cells, control systems) for passenger vehicles,
commercial vehicles, large engines and vehicle
integration. Next to the electrification of
powertrains, the company also places a strong
focus on new challenges in the autonomous
driving sector, especially concerning the
foundations of the way humans experience and
use of artificial intelligence.
The company is continuously working on
improving and expanding a highly integrated
development environment for vehicle
propulsion systems and their vehicle
integration. This highly agile development
environment includes state-of-the-art scalable
