Sie ist für viele, die Wien besuchen, ein Grund für die
Reise gewesen. Sie ist untrennbar mit dem Image von
Wien verbunden. Jene bayerische Prinzessin, die
Kaiserin von Österreich wurde und die in Genf
ermordet wurde. Sie ist immer noch eine Ikone.
Kaiserin Elisabeth, die auch Sisi genannt wurde, ist
nach wie vor Kult. Ihr ereignisreiches und spannendes
Leben, ihre romantischen Erlebnisse und ihre Tragödie
faszinieren heute noch und sie waren Inspiration für
zahlreiche Bücher und für die Filme mit Romy
Schneider, die Klassiker der österreichischen
Filmgeschichte sind. Auch Torten und Teemischungen
wurden nach ihr benannt. Nun gibt es ihr Leben auch
als Graphic Novel. Die junge Italienerin Giorgia Marras
zeigt Sisi als gebildete und weitgereiste Frau, die auf
ihre Unabhängigkeit viel Wert legte.
For many of those who come to Vienna, she is the
sole reason for their visit. She is inseparably
connected with the image of Vienna. The Bavarian
princess who became Empress of Austria and was
then murdered in Geneva. She still maintains her
iconic image. Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi,
remains a cult figure. Her eventful and exciting life,
her romantic experiences, as well as her tragedies,
fascinate people all over the world and have acted as
inspirations for books and a series of films with Romy
Schneider that have become classics of Austrian
cinematic history. Cakes and tea blends have been
named after her. Now, her life is also available as a
graphic novel. The young Italian artist Giorgia Marras
depicts Sisi as an educated and well-travelled woman,
who valued her independence immensely.

Was kann man noch zu oder über Thomas Bernhard,
den großen, ach so österreichischen Schriftsteller, den
Autor von „Heldenplatz“, “Holzfällen“ und „Auslöschung“,
sagen, was noch nicht schon längst gesagt
ist? André Heller, der Wiener Tausendsassa, zeigt,
dass es geht. Er hat gemeinsam mit der ausgezeichneten
Fotografin Herta Hurnaus dieses schöne Buch
herausgegeben, das jenen Vierkanthof im oberösterreichischen
Ohlsdorf besucht, den sich Thomas
Bernhard 1965 gekauft und über zehn Jahre hinweg zu
seinem Landsitz umgestaltete hatte. Nichts wurde
dem Zufall überlassen und so spiegeln das Gebäude,
sein Mobiliar, die vielen Gegenstände, die Bilder und
Bücher, die Schuhe und Jacken, die hier noch immer
zu finden sind, die Persönlichkeit des Besitzers.
What is left to be said about Thomas Bernhard – the
great and exceptionally Austrian author of works such
as “Heldenplatz” (“Heroes’ Square”), “Woodcutters”
and “Extinction” – that hasn’t been said already?
André Heller, Viennese jack of all trades, demonstrates
that it can be done. Together with the awardwinning
photographer Herta Hurnaus, he has released
a magnificent book that pays a visit to the farmhouse
in the Upper Austrian village of Ohlsdorf that
Bernhard had bought in 1965 and – over a period of
ten years – turned into his country estate. Nothing
was left to coincidence and thus the building, the
furniture, the many objects, pictures and books, the
shoes and jackets are still all around and perfectly
capture the persona of their owner.

west- and northward in the form of an arch from the
Apennine Mountains in the south all the way to Lake
Geneva, where it extends eastward, almost reaching
Vienna – around 1,200 kilometres long and 150
kilometres wide. Right in the middle, you will find the
highest peak in Europe, Mont Blanc, at 4810 metres
high. And although most of the Alps has been
uncovered and mapped, many parts have maintained
their natural and unspoiled brilliance. This photo
series depicts the regions of the Alps that remain wild
and untamed.
