punch hard in the first round.Most of the others in that era felt their
opponents out.Jerry just threw hard all the time.Oscar had no defense to speak
of.|
my friends on the board. I am not trying build Bonavena into a Hall of Fame
fighter. But Oscar's record is an example of how you cannot judge a fighter by
his record alone, albeit the fighters's record is probably the #1 determinant in
ranking a fighter, but it not the only one.Oscar was stopped only once
in his career, that was by Ali in the 15th round. No excuses here, but Oscar
was stopped as a result of the 3 knocked down rule in NYC. Oscar lost 2 fights
to Joe Frazier, a lot of people felt Oscar deserved no less than a draw in the
1st fight. Patterson beat him by decision, a lot of people thought Oscar won
that fight, it was that close. Jimmy Ellis, dropped Bonavena twice and beat
him convincingly conviningly. Oscar is not alone, Ellis also beat Jerry
Quarry,Johnny Persol, Floyd Patterson, George Chuvalo, Tony Doyle, Leotis
Martin, among others. Ellis was not a bad fighter. The point I am making
is styles make a fight, and someone like Kellerman makes statements based on
what others tell him about old time fighters, whom Kellerman never saw and what
he reads in the record books. He makes these unfounded statements in a shrill
voice, and because his opinions are not questioned, they are given false
accreditation. Bonavena was capable of giving anyone a tough fight, win or lose,
and he was always competative. Oscar was only stopped twice once by Ali in the
15th round, and by a high powered rifle at a whore house. I liked the guy |
heavyweight who won the national Golden Gloves title in 1965 was none other than
our own Jerry Quarry. I believe in a couple of those fights, he was outweighed
by over 40 pounds.|
CALIFORNIA||RONNYRAINS@yahoo.com||||10|Forest, yes i liked Bonavena too,i could
see jerry quarry getting frustrated,I could also see JERRY maybe even
stopping,oscar(He should have only been the third fighter in history to stop
CHUVALO)Athiough we will never know.Ross Brimer the thug guard, who shot
Bonavena-mysteriously is also dead, JIMMY ELLIS,for sure was good ,if not great
fighter for certain,He headined everywhere,and didn't dissapoint,like so many
other fighter's,he enavitably stayed around to long.|
|3/21/03 12:00:55 PM|John Gerard|NYC||rock289z@yahoo.com||||10|Ellis was a very
good fighter. He really was a blown-up middleweight who beat some very tough
heavies. He put Bonavena on the deck twice which is very hard to do. Ellis
starting going downhill after Shavers koyed him in 1. After that he stated
loosing to guys like Kirkman. Ellis had a good sneaky right that hurt Frazier
for a second in their first fight. He was also Ali's sparring partner for years.
Does anyone remember Roy Tiger Williams? He was pretty tough. Not many guys
wanted to mess with Roy.Also, Manual Ramos, the Mexican heavy of the 60's
died a few years ago I just learned.|
CALIFORNIA||RONNYRAINS@YAHOO.COM||||10|BIG JOHN:Manual Ramos is also dead?,do
you know the cause??I'LL JUST BET HE SUFFERED FROM DEMENTIA TOO.I wonder why
Ibar Arrington,and KIRKMAN,NEVER GOT IT ON UP IN SEATTLE,BONAVENA-KIRKMAN MIGHT
HAVE MADE FOR AN EXCITING BOUT,BET THE HOUSE ON BONAVENA!|
are right Kirkman is lucky he never fought Liston, even if Liston was 70 years
old. In fairness to Kirkman most fighters should be considered lucky if they
didn't have to fight Liston. I was at the Liston-Wepner fight. Besides the
fight itself, what I remember was Muhammad Ali was at the fight.Roy
Williams, there is a name from the past! I still remember his fight with Earnie
Shavers. I guess anyone who saw it still remembers it! Larry Holmes in his
biography gives a good detailed look at the career of Roy Williams, Holmes
