that Bonavena weighted about 280 lbs against Jimmy Ellis. Is it true? This would

weighed about 205 in his fight against Ellis. That was one of Oscar's worst
fights ever. He was knocked down twice in that fight. Bonavena was about 6'
tall. He was from Argentina but his parents came from Italy. He was a pretty
tough guy. His early trainer in the USA was Charlie Goldman who trained Rocky
Marciano. Goldman thought he had real potential. |

meant by that sentence (the word "lead") was first to allude to the headline
choosing philosophy of the news media, that "If it bleeds it leads." In terms of
leading in this case, I was predicting that no matter what Ali did, Fleischer
would atttempt to find something negative, or some way not to give the man his
due, even by just saying nothing when he should. Of course, Ali "got his due"
sometimes when he didn't deserve it too. Yes, the old Rings had a
statement inside about someone being able to bring the magazine home, leave it
on the coffee table, etc. "It is entertaining, and it is clean." I don't recall
other older magazines showing racy pictures. What was he talking about? Ads?|

Bugner was a tough guy that kept his hands up and his ass off of the floor most
of the time.A good thing to do when you're a boxer.Not much offense though.He
probably could lose to the present day heavyweights without getting hurt too
bad.He may even beat Orlin Norris. |

~tries~ to get hurt in the ring, or doesn't want to win, but from people I've
talked with about Bugner, and articles I've read, it seems that he took this a
bit too far, and often appeared to be trying more not to ~lose~ than to win. He
often jabbed or did nothing at all, as if he were "thinking about it" all the
time, and all too often the moment just passed. I understand that in the gym, he
looked awesome, incredibly quick and graceful and strong, but didn't always
carry this ability into the ring. Of course, no one looked worse in training
than Ali, letting guys bang on him, and possibly this is where a lot of his
damage was done.|

of stuff that wouldn't be tolerated today. The loose ropes in the Forman fight.
Ever notice how quick a ref. is to stop a fighter from holding behind the neck?
Ali not only held them behind the neck , he used his enormous strenth to pull
their heads down to waist level.Ali,had by that time , established such an aura
around himself,that judges and referees let him get away with it.
I've got to rank Ali as top dog in terms of ability to take a punch and absorb
punishment. I do it grudgingly, because I don't really respect Ali as a man.Not
for his politics or his life style. It is sometimes tiresome to read and see on
tv how Ali has somehow become a national hero. To me he was always probably the
best natural boxer in the world.He just happened to be a conceinsus objecter who
beat people up for a living.|
