Cassius Clay's chin wasn'tas good as Muhammad Ali's chin ! Is it possible ?
Idon't think that the Cassius Clay who fought againstCooper would have
been able to take the Shavers's, or Foreman's, or Frazier's bombs ! Is it
possible that, somehow, the ability to take a punch can improve getting older
?If this is true, which is the explanation ? It's notclear to me !|
curious to know your top five or top tenheavyweight list. I'm not a boxing
expert, I'mjust a boxing fan, but it's clear to me that youhave a very
personal way to rank the fighters ( probablybetter than mine ). You're way
to look at boxing isdifferent from most guys that write in this
site.Thanks.|
AM|Roadscholarette|Chicago||roadscholarette@hotmail.com||||10|Massimo -I
think the ability to take a punch is a fairly complicated issue. There is for
certain a psychological component, but I also think there's a physiological one
as well. I'm not sure that medicine has a handle on the physical part. Remember,
most doctors deal with what's ~known~, rather than what could be. The greatest
doctors are artists too, asking, testing, wondering, so perhaps the answer to
punch-taking will emerge one day. While faster than Ali, I think Cassius
Clay would have been eaten alive by Frazier or Foreman, as well as a number of
other contenders not willing to plod around before falling down for him.
Muhammad Ali was Cassius Clay as a fully grown man, and I think this maturity
brought into full flower his ability to take a punch as well as to weather the
fury of opponents of a caliber he never fought as Clay.|
mentioned this in another, general discussion forum, and I neglected to bring it
up in here, to people who'd actually enjoy it (no one in the other forum cared).
This Summer, I read a fantastic book (it's in libraries and bookstores) -
"Ghosts of Manila," by Mark Kram. Kram is not only a whale of a knowledgeable
boxing man, but one of the best authors you'll ever read, in any area. His
ability with words brings the world of the ring vividly alive like no one else.
This book not only is good reading, but has much information about boxing in
general, but more specifically about Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Even an
enthusiastic fan comes away with a lot of new information!|
inconsecuential book ,really did reach into the bowels of the hate ,
nastiness, politics, and big time international money that allowed this ,the best
fight between two mortal human beings that will ever take place! |
|10/7/03 01:49:39 AM|kookoo|ny||kookooclock000@yahoo.com||||8|thats the smartest
thing you've said so far misomo. i do have a different way of looking at
fighters. as they really are just humans, to look at them as indestructable is a
huge mistake. lets take frazier, he's not near as tough as people think, RON
STANDER STUNNED HIM in their 1972 fightali would have knock him out in their
2nd fight if not for a stupid referee! HERES MY LIST prime tyson is without a
doubt number 1 of all time followed by muhammad ali no. 2 after this it could be
lennex lewis in the 3rd spot from their on is just anybodys guess. no one can
stay on top to long, the human body won't let it happen. ask holyfield. yes
massimo I've been watching a long time keep reading my words and you will learn.
ahh the clock has run out again on me. coo coo|
reading a book on Ali that commented that he actually trained himself to be able
to withstand knockout blows. Ali allowed his training partners to hit him
