ILEX - HOLLY - AQUIFOLIACEAE
aquifolium - Common Holly, English Holly
____ An evergreen, slow-growing shrub, reaching eventually 8 to
10 m tall, with a broad or pointed upright-growing habit; leaves
tough and leathery, edges mainly wavy and sparsely toothed;
white flowers appearing in May/June; coral-red fruits appearing
from September and remain long through the season - for undergrowth
planting, hedging, as well as a specimen plant. H, R,
S. Zone 7a.
aquifolium ´Alaska´ -
____ Grows somewhat slower than the species, with a narrower and
compacter-growing habit; leaves small, dark green, very shiny,
wavy and sparsely toothed - a freely-fruiting, female cultivar. H,
R, S. Zone 6b.
aquifolium ´Golden van Tol´ -
____ Similar in growth and branching as ´J. C. van Tol´; leaves smaller,
rounder, with a dull shine, edges golden yellow and less
thorny - an effective, new cultivar. S. Zone 7b.
aquifolium ´Harpune´ (Hachmann 1978) -
____ A mutation of ´Alaska´; leaves narrow and lanceolate, tapered,
hardly thorny, glossy fresh green with striking light green midrib;
leaf base harpoon-shaped - very hardy cultivar, that surpasses
´Myrtifolia´ in growth. R, S. Zone 7a.
aquifolium ´J. C. van Tol´ (= polycarpa) -
____ A broad-growing, up to 8 m tall shrub, with erect shoots and
purple young shoots; leaves mainly ovate, slightly toothed near
the apices, 5 to 7 cm long, shiny undersides; orange-red berries
remain long over the season - an established, especially freefruiting
cultivar. H, R, S. Zone 6b.
aquifolium ´Myrtifolia´ -
____ Very dense-growing, small shrub with small, lanceolate, tapered,
shiny green leaves with finely toothed edges. R, S. Zone 7a.
