____ A small-growing cultivar of the Chinese Redbud, originating from<br />

New Zealand, hardly growing over 2 m tall in 10 years; leaves<br />

heart-shaped, dark green above and lighter below, turning yellow<br />

in autumn; flowers bright purple-red, numerous, appearing<br />

early in the season before the foliage along the entire twigs and<br />

branches. An ornamental shrub that is richly free-flowering even<br />

when young, suitable for small gardens, planting troughs etc.;<br />

prefers warm areas, but still winter-hardy. D, K, S, St. Zone 7a.<br />

siliquastrum - Judas Tree<br />

____ A large shrub, 4 to 6 m tall with a funnel-like, loose crown, leaves<br />

kidney-shaped, yellow in autumn; flowers purplish-pink on perennial<br />

sprigs and few, branching, main shoots; flowers are orange-red;<br />

fruits yellow to yellowish-orange, almost to the size of an apple<br />

or quince, ripening early September to mid-October, with a higher<br />

content in vitamin C than lemons and twice as much pectin as<br />

apples – a cultivar from Latvia, termed as the “Northern lemon”<br />

planted for the production of juices, jams, fruit pastes, jelly, dessert<br />

wines, liquor etc. B, H, Z. Zone 5a. Plant Breeders’ rights<br />
