____ An evergreen, upright-growing, 1 to 1.5 m tall shrub with red,
rod-like basal shoots, hairy when young; leaves are elliptical
and long, 4 to 10 cm long, glabrous above and slightly hairy on
the underside, turning bright red to violet-red autumn colours,
remaining on plant till spring depending on the habitat; flowers
are white, fragrant, carried on up to 15 cm long, upright, hairy
and dense racemes, appearing in May till July – a shrub that
should be given more attention due to its flowers, its spectacular
autumn colours and production of suckers. B, K, Z. Zone 6a.
