____ A very slow-growing, much-branched shrub, rarely over 2 m tall<br />

and wide; leaves obovate, up to 10 cm long, with wavy edges;<br />

flowers snow-white, fragrant, fully opened, with <strong>12</strong> to 15 narrow<br />

petals appearing in March/April - a valuable,especially earlyflowering<br />

species. S. Zone 6a.<br />

stellata ´Royal Star´ -<br />

____ Differs from the species in its faster-growing habit, the higher<br />

number of petals (25 to 30) and the later flowering season<br />

(about 10 days later), whereby damage due to late frost can<br />

often be avoided - a valuable, free-flowering, improved cultivar<br />

to the species. S. Zone 6a.<br />

´Sundew´ - NEW!<br />

____ A fast-growing shrub with strong branches and large, lovely<br />

flowers, white outside and purple within, 20 to 22 cm in diameter,<br />

appearing April/May - a free-flowering selection from England,<br />

that flowers even when young. S. Zone 6a.<br />

´Susan´ (= liliiflora ´Nigra´ x stellata ´Rosea´) -<br />

____ A compact-growing cultivar with numerous, slender, up to 15 cm<br />

long, purplish-red flowers; very long flowering season (from end<br />

of April to early June) - probably the loveliest of the 8 cultivars<br />

originated from the U.S. National Arboretum Washington; a magnificent<br />

cultivar for small gardens. S. Zone 6a.<br />

aquifolium - Oregon Grape<br />

____ An evergreen, upright and bushy-growing shrub, hardly over 1<br />

m tall; pinnate leaves up to 20 cm long, 5 to 11 leaflets, glossy<br />

dark green, leathery and thorny, turning crimson to dark red in<br />

winter; flowers yellow, honey-fragrant, abundant, borne in erect,<br />

terminal racemes in April/May; fruits dark crimson with a bluish<br />

covering - exceptionally suitable for undergrowth and mass<br />

plantings. B, H, R, St, Z. Zone 5b.<br />
