rhytidophyllum - Leatherleaf Viburnum
____ An evergreen, 3 to 4 m tall, strong-growing shrub with somewhat
stiff branches; evergreen leaves up to 25 cm long, strong
wrinkled, above glossy green, downsides very hairy and pannosed
in grey to brown; flowers creamy white, in flat, 10 to 20
cm wide, umbel-like trusses blooming in May/June; in autumn
already formed as clearly visable buds; fruits 8 mm long, first red
later polished black – a robust and hardy woody plant suitable
as specimen or for planting in groups for fresh nutritious soils in
sunny to shady positions. H, R, S, St. Zone 6b.
sargentii ´Onondaga´ - Sargent Viburnum
____ Up to 2 m tall and equally broad shrub; shoots dark grey, corky,
young shoots densely and finely covered with hairs; leaves
3-lobed, 10 to 14 cm long and 9 to 14 cm wide, chestnut-bronze
when young, later bronze-green; inflorescences in 5 to 12 cm
wide, flat corymbs, buds red, creamy white to pale pink when
blooming, appearing end of May to early June - selected in 1959
by D.R. EGOLF, US National Arboretum - a striking, dark-leaved
shrub, with very contrasting flowers, effective when combined
with yellow-leaved woody plants, very hardy, and suitable for all
soil types. R, H, K. Zone 5b.
tinus (= lucidum) - Laurustinus
____ An evergreen, dense and bushy-growing shrub. 2 to 4 m tall,
with glossy, dark green leaves; flowers white to pink-white, born
in arching, terminal, umbel-like trusses, from late autumn till
spring; fruits oval, deep blue at first, finally black - a striking,
winter-flowering shrub for protected sites, especially lovely as
container plant. H, K, S. Zone 7b.

____ A selection with low, compact-growing habit and having narrower
leaves than the species; very attractive, carmine flower

____ A compact and broad-growing shrub; leaves broadly elliptic,
glossy dark green; flower buds bronze-red, creamy whíte with
pink wings when blooming; fruits metallic blue, appearing in
September to November - a lovely and versatile cultivar, especially
suitable as a potted plant. H, K, S. Zone 7b.
