MALUS (Continued)
´Tina´ -
____ Malus sargentii will only be 2 m tall with horizontally spreading
branches; ´Tina´ ,on the other hand, grows distinctly slower and
flowers much more than the species; white flowers appear out
of striking red buds; leaves mainly 3-lobed, turning yellow in autumn
- definitely the best, dwarf cultivar at the moment. S. Zone
5b.
´Van Eseltine´ (= ´Geneva´) -
____ Up to 4 m tall, erect and upright-growing cultivar, with a broad,
columnar-growing habit; leaves green; flowers double, strong
pink, 4 to 5 cm across, appearing in May; fruits flatly round, 2
cm, totally yellow or with a red tone - a very effective cultivar.
S. Zone 5a.
MESPILUS - MEDLAR - ROSACEAE
germanica - Medlar
____ A tree-like shrub, 2.5 m tall; leaves long, lanceolate, non-glossy
green; flowers white, 4 to 5 cm across, appearing in May/June;
fruits brownish green at first, later bronze-coloured, 3 to 4 cm
thick, after frost the fruits are edible, with a sweet-sour (marmelade-like)
taste. A traditional fruit plant for free-growing hedges,
planting on public grounds, around housing settlements and in
villages. S. Zone 5a.
MORUS - MULBERRY - MORACEAE
alba (= australis, bombycis, kagayamae, mongolica) - White Mulberry
____ Up to 15 m tall tree with rounded, loosely-branched crown; leaves
broadly oval, mostly lobed, coarsely toothed, vivid green;
flowers borne in hanging, axillary catkins; fruits like blackberries,
white, red to dark red, almost flavourless - a tree tolerant to dryness,
calcareous soils, and adaptable to industrial sites; also
use for silkworm breeding. R, S. Zone 5b.
