____ A broad and low-growing shrub with multiple shoots; leaves<br />

rather large, 5- to 7-pinnate, shiny, autumn, winter leaves and<br />

shoot break bronze in colour; flowers numerous, in very large,<br />

loosely, panicle-like racemes, deep yellow, appearing in April/<br />

May - an especially valuable mahonia. B, H, R, St, Z. Zone 5b.<br />

aquifolium ´Smaragd´ - Oregon Grape ´Smaragd´<br />

____ An evergreen, broad-growing shrub, up to 70 cm tall; foliage<br />

glossy emerald-green, retaining its colour even in winter; flowers<br />

numerous, golden yellow, borne in large, dense racemes,<br />

appearing in April/May - very hardy cultivar (up to -27°C), with<br />

healthy foliage and impressive flowers. B, H, R, St, Z. Zone 5a.<br />

japonica ´Hivernant´ (= ´Hiemalis´) - Leatherleaf Mahonia<br />

____ Having a sturdy, dense and broadly upright growing pattern, 1 to<br />

1.5 m tall; leaves large, 25 to 50 cm long with 11 to 15 leaflets;<br />

flowers light yellow, up to 45 cm long either upright or hanging,<br />

with a strong fragrance, appearing from end February to early<br />

April. A robust plant with good hardiness and exceptional ornamental<br />

value for winter. R, S, St, Z. Zone 6b.<br />
