administr<strong>at</strong>ion. 35 The total value of foods purchased by WIC participants<br />

with the vouchers in Erie County in 2009 was about $13 million. 36<br />

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)<br />

SFMNP provides low­income seniors over 60 years of age with<br />

vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables <strong>at</strong> farmers’ market through<br />

FMNP, which runs during harvest seasons, generally from May to October. 37<br />

To be eligible for SFMNP in Erie County, a participant have a monthly<br />

income less than $1,670 (or less than $2,246 for a senior couple) and<br />

Energy Assistance Program, or Section 8 Housing vouchers. 38<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ional School Lunch Program (NSLP)<br />

NSLP provides free or low­cost, nutritionally balanced lunches<br />

to children from low­income families <strong>at</strong> school. In Erie County, NSLP is<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ed by Erie County’s Department of Social Services. To be eligible for<br />

MGSQE(0(!4,31(&%$/(?%03,.5(."+(GM8Q(2'#')/$6 39<br />

An increasingly larger proportion of students are eligible for the<br />

NSLP in Erie County. In the 2009­2010 school year, 33 percent of students<br />

in Erie County (43,689 students) were eligible for free lunch <strong>at</strong> school, an<br />

increase by 3.5 percent from a decade ago. The proportion of those eligible<br />

for reduced­price stayed <strong>at</strong> 8.0 percent (10,718 students) (See Figure 1.8).<br />

consumed this recommended healthy food intake between 2006 and 2008,<br />
