literario.

Church of Our Lady of Candelaria
Constructed in 1957 on the site of the ancient
hermitage where the Parish of Villa de Moya
was founded in 1515, this church is one of the
municipality’s most emblematic buildings,
thanks to its stunning silhouette that rises up
over the ravine of Barranco de Moya, built in
a medievalist style and with regionalist elements.
These include its three rose windows
and other colour windows that represent different
biblical scenes. Its interior is home to
important examples of religious art work, such
as the carving of the patron saint of Moya, Our
Lady of Candelaria, dating from the 15th century,
or the San Judas Tadeo, the work of prestigious
Gran Canaria-born religious sculptor
José Luján Pérez, in 1803.
Water Distribution Board
Set in a two-storey stately building dating from
the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th
century, it features a symmetrical quarry stone
façade, a porche and six neoclassical-style columns
holding up a lintelled cornice over which
the central bell tower and clock rises up. The
clock was used as a reference point for managing
the distribution of the rainwater and natural
spring water among its members.
The Tomás Morales House Museum
This is a high, 19th century building with a
flat roof, courtyard and back garden, and was
where Moya-born poet Tomás Morales (1884-
1921) spent his early childhood. The writer is
considered to be one of the finest exponents
of Canary lyrical modernism and one of the
leading Spanish authors of this literary movement.
Plaza de la Candelaria
Situated behind the church of Our Lady of
Candelaria, this is a square and a viewing point
with views over Barranco de Moya, the Los Tilos
Special Natural Reserve and the strip of coastline
that runs along the north of the island.
Water mill
A 19th century hydraulic infrastructure, with
an annexed stone water channel known as a
cantonera with 12 outlets for running water
coming in from the Moya Water Board, and a
bucket measuring 1.5 metres in diameter. It is
a shining example of the technological development
and popular creativity that went into
crop irrigation in the surrounding area.
El Roque
A basalt rock headland that sticks out some
300 metres into the sea, on which a strip of
houses perches, with a network of narrow back
streets, originally built for families who used to
work in the large plantations nearby, especially
banana plantations.
La Montañeta
This is the most important archaeological settlement
in Villa de Moya, and comprises of a set
of five caves once inhabited by Canary aborigines.
They are located at 433 metres altitude in
the mountainside, and were used as rooms as
well as for the storage of cereals, as a sanctuary
and as a place of burial.
Barranco de Azuaje
This is one of the most important ravines at
the north of Gran Canaria, and is of outstanding
beauty. It forms part of Doramas Rural Park
and has Special Natural Reserve status. With
a landscape comprising rugged mountains,
rocky cavities, lush endemic vegetation and
with permanently running water that features
waterfalls and pools, it is also home to a priceless
architectural, ethnographic and archaeological
heritage.
Los Tilos Special Natural Reserve
Covering an area of 91 hectares, this natural
space is the best preserved example of lush
laurel tree woodland that once occupied the
whole of the north of Gran Canaria. Part of the
ancient Doramas Jungle, it is home to numerous
species of endemic animals and plants
that are currently under serious threat of extinction.
There is a circular footpath that has
been specially adapted for walking around.
Doramas Rural Park
Villa de Moya is home to the largest part of
this natural space, with no less than 1,626 hectares
of its surface area located in Moya. It is an
eco-cultural landscape in which farming and
cattle-rearing lived side by side with geomorphological
formations and priceless wooded
areas. The park boasts an outstanding biodiversity
of flora and fauna, with a high number
of protected endemic species.
sendero circular habilitado.
Parque Rural de Doramas

natural, con 1.626 hectáreas de su superficie en
territorio moyense. Un paisaje eco-cultural en el que

protegidas.
