Turismo de Canarias and the ULPGC team up
to create a gastronomic research centre

The Department of Tourism, Industry and
Commerce headed by Councillor Yaiza Castilla
has awarded a direct grant of €100,000 to the
University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (UOPGC)
for the commissioning the University Gastronomic
Research Centre. The project is conceived as a
laboratory for the design of new products and
experiences, as well as providing training for
gastronomy and tourism students in general.
Councillor Yaiza Castilla explains that this grant is
part of a series of actions being carried out by her
department in order to innovate and seek new
alternatives to widen and continue to consolidate
the islands’ commitment to quality tourism.
“At this time of critical impasse for the tourism
industry, we need to reinvent ourselves, with the

support of scientific knowledge, as a source of
competitive advantage and economic growth”,
says the head of Turismo de Canarias.
The grant that has been awarded to the
Department of Tourism Infrastructures will fund
the acquisition of necessary equipment and the
refurbishment of current facilities at the ULPGC for
the establishment of the research centre. The aim
is to offer a wide perspective of gastronomy and
to link up with the rest of the economic activities
in the value chain (primary sector, commerce,
catering and tourism), with a focus on the digital
analysis of the image, reputation, impact of
emotions and experience of tourists at the holiday
destination, and subsequently upon their return
home.

La Consejería de Turismo, Industria y Comercio
que dirige Yaiza Castilla ha concedido
una subvención directa a la Universidad
de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria de 100.000
euros para la puesta en marcha del denominado
Centro Universitario de Investigación
Gastronómica. Un proyecto concebido como
un laboratorio en el que se diseñarán nuevos
productos y experiencias a la vez que se facilitará
formación a estudiantes de gastronomía
y turismo, en general.
La consejera Yaiza Castilla explica que esta
subvención forma parte de las acciones que
su departamento está impulsando para innovar
y buscar nuevas alternativas que permitan
ampliar y seguir consolidando la oferta
turística de calidad que ofrecen las islas.
“En este momento de impasse crítico para la
industria turística, es necesario reinventarse,
teniendo de aliado al conocimiento científico,
como fuente de la ventaja competitiva y
del crecimiento económico”, asegura la titular
de Turismo de Canarias.
La subvención aportada con cargo a los fondos
de la Dirección General de Infraestructuras
Turísticas permitirá la adquisición del
equipamiento necesario y el acondicionamiento
de unas instalaciones ya existentes
en la ULPGC, para la implantación de este
centro, en el que se pretende ofrecer una
amplia perspectiva de la gastronomía y vinculada
con el resto de actividades económicas
de la cadena de valor (sector primario,
comercio, restauración y turismo), con una
orientación al análisis digital de la imagen,
reputación, impacto de las emociones y experiencia
del turista en el destino, y con posterioridad
a su regreso a casa.
