Gran Canarian wine shines brightly at the International Wine Awards

with two gold medals and three silver medals for Bodega Ventura

The awards endorse the family tradition located in Santa Brígida, pioneered by the current owner’s grandmother.

Gran Canaria shone brightly in the

latest edition of the prestigious International

Wine Awards, coming

away with two gold medals and

three silver medals, obtained by five

different wines grown by Bodega

Ventura in Santa Brígida. They stood

out in a constellation of 2,249 wines

and liqueurs presented by around

30 different countries and which endorse

the family tradition pioneered

by the grandmother of this eminent

wine-producing clan.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria immediately

passed on its recognition

to the owner of the bodega, Javier

Ventura, the heir to this tradition

following in the footsteps of his father,

Alfonso Ventura, and who has

now earned international recognition

with gold medals awarded to

his Cruz Listán Negro from 2018 and

his Eidan Dulce from 2019, both of

which achieved over 90 points out

of a possible 100, while silver medals

were awarded to his young red wine,

semi-sweet white wine and red wine

made from grapevines from Vega

de Acusa which survived the forest

fire that swept across the island’s

summit last summer.

Each of these fine wines have a

great story behind them and are

like a family history encapsulated

in a bottle. The El Cruz Listán Negro

wine, for example, is a tribute to the

wine-producer’s grandmother, María

Teresa Cruz, for encouraging the

family to continue in the wine-producing

business. Many of the vines

on which the award-winning grapes

were cultivated are over 80 years

old.

The International Wine Awards were

held in Vitoria, one of the world epicentres

of wine production, and the

event featured entries from such

wide-ranging places as Argentina,

Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Canada,

France, the Czech Republic, Germany,

Malta, Greece, Hungary and

Mexico, and of these entries, 674 wines

finally came away with awards.

The results were broadcast to 9,000

wine importers around the world.

Wine promotion, alongside other locally

grown farm and sea products

on the island, is part of the Cabildo’s

‘I Like Gran Canaria’ programme, set

up to promote food sovereignty and

the consumption of locally sourced

produce. Accolades such as the one

earned by Bodega Ventura, who

have accumulated over 30 awards in

different wine contests, are yet another

shining example of the evergrowing

local product range, both in

terms of their quantity and quality.

El vino de Gran Canaria

brilla en el International

Wine Awards con

dos medallas de oro

y tres de plata para la

Bodega Ventura

calidad.
