Kurzfassung
Holz(flug-)asche als Zementersatz
Screening verschiedener
andere Merkmale variierten. Es gibt keine aktuelle
Norm, die die Verwendung von Holz(flug-)
aschen als teilweisen Zementersatz regelt. Daher
wurde EN 450-1 für Flugasche für Beton, die
auch die Mitverbrennung regelt, zur Bewertung
der Zusammensetzung der untersuchten WAs
herangezogen.
an primären Oxiden erschienen problematisch.
1 Introduction
The EU aims to be climate-neutral by 2050
with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions,
which is formulated in the European Green
Deal and is in line with the EU’s commitment
to global climate action under the
Paris Agreement. Renewable energy plays
a fundamental role and the use of coal is
expected gradually to diminish, while bioenergy
increases. Traditionally, bioenergy
has been considered carbon neutral because
the released carbon is absorbed by
the harvested crops’ regrowth. Bioenergy
from incineration of wood in combined
heat and power plants is increasing in
many countries.
Wood ash (WA) is a residue, which inevitably
is generated during incineration of
wood and wood products (chips, sawdust,
bark, etc.). To obtain a resource efficient
society, it is important to find use for residues
like WA. Several researchers have tested
WAs as partly cement replacement, however,
such use of WA (pure biomass ash) is
not covered by the standard EN 450-1,
which covers fly ash derived from co-combustion
of pulverised coal and green wood,
where the minimum percentage of coal is
50 % by dry mass. It is necessary to increase
the knowledge on the effects from different
WA characteristics on the concrete properties
in order to enable practical use if WA in
concrete and development of proper standardization
within the field.
The published experimental research focusing
on the effect from WA as cement replacement
on concrete properties has
shown very different results. A major reason
is that WA characteristics vary significantly
[Sigvardsen et al. 2019], [Carevic et al.
2019]. Physical and chemical properties of
WA depend on many factors: species of tree,
method of combustion including temperature
and other fuel co-combusted with the
wood, and method of wood ash collection
[Etitgni & Campell, 1991]. While the elemental
composition of the ash is determined
by the inorganic constituents in the parent
bio- mass, the crystallinity and mineralogy
depend on the combustion technique used
[Umamaheswaran & Batra, 2008].
The aim of this work is to evaluate the possible
use of two different WAs as cement
replacement either as received directly
from the wood incineration plants or after
different pre-treatments. The WAs are characterized
and compared to the requirements
in EN 450-1. Mortar specimens are
cast for an evaluation of the influence from
the WAs on the compressive strength. Literature
has shown potential at low-cement
replacements [Sigvardsen et al. 2020], and
thus the work focus on 5 or 10 % cement
replacement. A screening of the influence
from different WA pre-treatment methods
(hydration, heating to 550 °C, or washing
in water or acid) on the ash mineralogy
and compressive strength when incorporating
the pre-treated WAs into mortar is
reported.
2 Materials and methods
2.1 Wood ashes
Wood ashes from two Danish mono incineration
plants are used (see F i g u r e 1 ).
WA1 is from Køge Kraftvarmeværk, which
is a combined heat and power plant. The
wood incinerated is waste wood (chips and
powder) from production of parquet floor
