Karn Khamheang and Tanachat Sooksawasd are classmates
from the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University and
principal architects of ‘Pommballstudio,’ a Chiang Mai-based
architecture practice they co-founded in 2014. The studio’s
track records include architectural and interior design projects
as well as Corporate Identity (CI), developed from the two
founders’ belief in creativity as the most vital tool in design.
They both share a liking for simplicity, clean-looking, modern
and minimal aesthetics, the trait evident in their previous
projects, especially a number of cafes they did in Chiang Mai
such as Transit No.8, The Baristro Asian, Morestto Cafe and
Yen Dessert. Nevertheless, to say that these works define
Pommballstudio’s design language wouldn’t be entirely accurate
since the duo bases their design development on their
understanding and interpretation of each client’s identity and
demands, while maintaining the balance between the inputs
and preferences of both the design team and the project’s
owner. Such an approach allows each of their work to have its
own elements, style, surrounding context, functionalities,
aesthetic values, limitations, all of which work together in
tandem.
With a master’s degree in MBA from Khon Kaen University,
Kanchana Shnatepaporn is the founder and head designer of
‘by Heart,’ a Khon Kaen-based clothing brand that has been
operating for 14 years now. Having witnessed how COVID-19
has brought devastating impacts to local designers and
members of the local crafts community, Shnatepaporn
realizes the importance of family and being back home. In
2020, she created the ‘BWILD ISAN’ brand. Through ‘Por Laew
Dee The Creator’ project, Shnatepaporn is one of the members
of the sixth edition of workshop who navigated possible ways,
approaches to build a strong, sustainable business, and is able
to overcome the crisis with the strong foundation she developed
for the brand.
BWILD ISAN is created to be a non-profit oriented business
that focuses more on people and community. The brand invites
local designers and artisans who share the same belief to
create good, meaningful design products, presenting itself as
a platform for young generation individuals in the region to
showcase their passion and abilities, and create works with
a meaningful foundation; a creative product that can benefit
the community and society it is from and something that brings
pride and encourages people to see and appreciate their worth
and values. Shnatepaporn believes that the diverse
backgrounds of her team members and the support within
the community will collectively build a stronger immunity for
the business. The incubation of a fair business for all will
create balance, adequacy and ultimately a sustainable
development that leads to a true self-sufficiency.
BWILD ISAN, which refers to the courage to turn ordinary
things from Isan (the northeastern region of Thailand) into
something extraordinary, is the brand whose ultimate
objective is to bring more values to the region, passing on
local wisdom from one generation to the next and driving
every part of the mechanism of development to grow and
prosper in their own ways.
