ASA Architectural design award 2022 pavilion

From the intention to create a space that showcases
works by the winners of 2022’s ASA Architectural
Design Award and ASA Conservation Award, to the
design of the ‘Wall of Wisdom’ pavilion whose
design reveals a brilliant combination between the
characteristics and creative traits of its creators. The
pavilion reflects the distinctive identity of BWILD ISAN,
a fashion brand from Khon Kaen by Kanchana
Shnatepaporn with works that take inspiration from
ways of life, cultures and local wisdom of Isan, the
northeastern region of Thailand. BWILD ISAN’s strong
personality is met with the design accent of
Pommballstudio, the architectural practice run by two
architects, Tanachat Sooksawasd and Karn
Khamheang, who incorporate the use of everyday,
ordinary materials into their unique architectural and
interior design creations.
Wall of Wisdom pavilion is an expression of a
perfectly balanced combination of characters and
identities between BWILD ISAN, a fashion brand from
Thailand’s Isan region, and Pommballstudio,
an architecture studio from the northern part of
Thailand. The design reflects the meaning of
mutualism, which is the interpretational trajectory both
parties share, especially in the creation of new values
from ordinary objects in the design, installation and
reproduction. Their objective is for the pavilion to
fulfill its functional purpose efficiently while
possessing a simplistic beauty that can still be
appealing to viewers through diverse spatial
experiences and sentiments, varied by the many
portions and dimensions of the pavilion and all the
hidden details.
The design team presents the pavilion as a sculptural
architecture, taking the surrounding natural
environment as the key inspiration of the spatial
manipulation and development of the work’s physical
appearance. The two collaborators choose ‘partition’
as the principal element of the main exhibition area
and a medium through which the design concept is
delivered. The partitions are arranged into a
superimposed configuration to facilitate a circulation
that separates into different routes, similar to how a
leaf carries nutrients to different parts of a tree. The
partitions are designed to have various sizes and
heights, installed into a premeditated yet seemingly
randomized order, between the shortest and the tallest,
the smallest and the biggest. The arrangement
simulates the superimposed layers of natural
materials such as bamboo shoots and tree barks. The
design is realized to gradually open different parts and
sections inside the exhibition, curating diverse,
non-repetitive viewing experiences.
The exhibition program is located next to the main
circulation route, at the center of the pavilion with
other secondary routes situated next to the outside
walkway. The design decodes the physical attributes
of flowers and plant seeds encased in a protective
covering, curating the order of storytelling from the
outside into the essence of the exhibition with the
displayed work situated at the heart of the pavilion.
The all-white solid walls are built using wooden frames
and clad with smart boards or gypsum panels, while
the translucent/transparent parts function as the skin,
wrapping the center in the way that mimics the layered
attributes of natural materials. Additional details can
be found in the form of layers of woven vertical and
horizontal fibers, creating transparent/translucent
patterns on each of the walls.
