Fulfilling the Father’s Wish
The Principal Residence had been the home of Queen Savang Vadhana since 1916 until her
departure in 1955. It is speculated that the construction of the Principal Residence was completed
between 1914 and 1915. The exhibition at Queen Savang Vadhana Museum is curated into three
different time periods in three different parts of the museum building.
The first part features the time period when the construction of the residence was already
completed and Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom commenced his stay after returning from
his study abroad. Around this time, an important event took place. King Vajiravudh presided at the
wedding ceremony of Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom and Princess Srinagarindra, which
took place at the Principal Residence of Sra Pathum Palace on September 10th, 1920. This special
event is put together into a portion of the exhibition, which occupies the museum’s Ceremonial Room
and Formal Room.
The second part tells the story of the time when Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom
returned from England and stayed at Sra Pathum Palace with his wife and daughter. The installation
of the items that encapsulates this specific time period takes place inside the Grey Hall and the
workroom at Queen Savang Vadhana Museum.
The third part takes over the living room, the prayer room and the bedroom. In this
particular time period, Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom and Princess Srinagarindra welcomed
their two sons, King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumipholal the Great, to the family. After
completing his medical study in the United States, Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom came
back to Thailand with all the members of his family.
Another significant segment of the exhibition is the ‘porch on the upper floor of the
Principal Residence,’ which was Queen Savang Vadhana’s favorite spot. During the later years of her
life, Queen Savang Vadhana spent a majority of her time out at the upper porch connected to her
bedroom (now the prayer room). She would come out after waking up and spending the rest of her day
resting and having meals.
King Bhumibol the Great, along with Queen Sirikit, paid a visit at the opening of Queen Savang
Vadhana Museum and the “A Home of the Young King” exhibition held on April 27th, 2012.
Carrying on the Work
HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of Queen Savang
Vadhana Museum and the special exhibition, ‘Queen Savang Vadhana Museum: The History’ held on
December 17th, 2009. The exhibition was divided into two parts:
This particular space was also where one of the most important events in her life took place,
for it was here that the wedding ceremony between King Bhumibol the Great and Queen Sirikit was
held with Queen Savang Vadhana presiding.
The museum has opened and hosted several exhibitions throughout the years from “The
100 Years of Sra Pathum Palace” (2010) , “A Home of the Young King” (2011), “The Prestige of the
Queen” ( December 17th, 2012 – March 31st, 2013) “Siam – American: Queen Savang Vadhana” (2013)
to “Queen Savang Vadhana: Virtues and Greatness through the Eyes of HRH Princess Maha Chakri
Sirindhor ” (2014) “The 84 Years in the Life of the Queen Mother Sirikit” (2015), and “Inherited Traits
and Duties”, the exhibition which tells the stories of Queen Savang Vadhana’s royal duties and the
The Exhibition Hall hosted a screening of the documentary ‘Queen Savang Vadhana Museum:
The History,’ recounting the queen’s life story, the restoration of the Principal Residence of Sra Pathum
Palace and a number of other exhibitions held on different special occasions throughout the years.
