‘Chan Cher Architects and Design’ is a design practice led by
architects Tat Wattanamethee and Atcha Somphong with
extensive experience in architectural and landscape architectural
design. The two partners founded the studio in 2020 after the
decision to settle down in Sakon Nakhon province with the
goal to build a team of architects and designers who wish to
return to and be a part of the development of their hometown.
The name of the studio is the combination of two Thai words,
’chan,’ a semi-outdoor area that connects the indoor and
outdoor spaces of a house, and ‘cher,’ which translates to
trees or plants. The moniker illustrates the duo’s sentiment
and design approach that center around the relationships
between architecture and nature, the tangible and abstract
existences of things, and the genuine sustainability after the
design and construction processes come to an end and the
actual usage begins. Their works are the results of their study
and attempt to understand stories and raw materials in a
locality, finding a common ground between users’ demands
and the design team’s ideas to create contemporary architectural
creations equipped with functionalities designed to fulfill
users’ needs and requirements while preserving the value of
building’s location and context.The studio’s expanding portfolio
consists of residential design, renovation and interior design,
landscape architecture,conservation all the way to projects
that are initiated as a part of Sakon Nakhon’s urban public
space development. They are now planning to expand their
interests and practice to other areas of creative disciplines in
addition to architecture in the future.
Hailing from a southern province of Thailand, Supachai Klaewtanong
is a young man with an interest in the creative
profession. After earning his degree in product design from
the Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University, he began
the first decade of his professional experiences working in all
types of jobs, from being a full-time employee of an
automobile company to designing merchandise for hotels and
establishments in the hospitality industry with a special focus
of crafts products. In 2012, he decided to return home to
Nakhon Si Thammarat to pursue his dream. By combining his
creativity to local wisdom and materials, the works
Klaewtanong created do not only elevate the commercial
value and level of recognition of craft products, but is also
bringing the local crafts and craftsmanship skills to a wider
group of consumers and bigger markets while creating more
career opportunities for people in the local community.
Currently, Klaewtanong sits as the founder and director of
‘Nakkhid Design Studio Company Limited’ whose areas of
expertise include product design, graphic design and
packaging design. He is also the mind behind the development
of ‘TIMA,’ a brand that represents handicraft products from
the south. He was awarded the winner of Innovative Craft
Award by The Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of
Thailand (Public Organization) or SACICT, the 2015, 2018 and
2019 DEmark Award for his designs of lamp, coffee table and
a collection of craft products made of Nipa Palm, including
the 2017’s Designer of the Year Awards in the Product Design
Category from Silpakorn University.
