Between 1914 and 1915, Queen Savang Vadhana, the consort of King Chulalongkorn, ordered
for the Principal Residence to be built to welcome the return of Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej
Vikrom. A book by Somphop Chantaraprapa, wrote about how Queen Savang Vadhana came up with
the layout of the residence herself, using matchsticks and leave stems to map out the layouts of the
rooms with seasonal climate and wind directions all thought out. Queen Savang Vadhanaor assigned
M.C. Chantaranipha Devakul to sketch the layouts before handing the sketches over to the architect
to further develop into the design of the residence. There was a record that in 1916, there were a
number of purchase orders for furniture from Maple & Co. Store in Paris, France. After the construction
was completed, the residence became the home of Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom, his
wife, Princess Srinagarindra, and their three children. There were a lot of activities going on during
the children’s playtimes while they were residing in the palace. Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani
Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra wrote in her book, “Small Masters, the Young King’
about how Sra Pathum Palace was the first home in Thailand of King Ananda Mahidol and King
Bhumipholal the Great.
The Principal Residence of Sra Pathum Palace was the place Queen Savang Vadhana lived
until the day she passed away. The place had been under the care of Princess Srinagarindra until her
departure before King Bhumibol the Great granted the Palace to be HRH Princess Maha Chakri
Sirindhorn’s residence along with his expressed wish:
“Sra Pathum Palace is significant to the Royal Family and the nation for it had been the
residence of Queen Savang Vadhana since 1916 until the day of her departure in 1955. It should be
established as a museum, which will serve as a memorial place to commemorate the Queen Grandmother
and exhibit her life and work in public welfare.”
“Sra Pathum Palace,” the place of loving memories and connections of the four generations
of the Mahidol Royal Family: Queen Savang Vadhanaor, Prince Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom,
King Bhumibol the Great and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
