After getting his bachelor degree in architecture from the
Faculty of Architecture and Design, Rajamangala University
of Technology Phra Nakhon, Xaroj Phrawong went on to study
a master’s degree the same field at Faculty of Architecture,
Silpakorn University before beginning the career path he was
trained for. He shifted his role from a professional architect
to his current role as a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture
and Design, Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon.
In addition to his work in the academic sphere, Phrawong is
a thinker and writer with a keen interest in design, architecture
and culture. He is currently a PhD student in Architecture at
Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan, where he focuses his
study on the changes and transformations of spatial
functionalities of temples within the current society contexts
and conditions. Despite being active in different professional
disciplines, for Phrawong, the most important thing about
each role he plays is the true understanding of problems and
solutions. He always thinks of all the roles and responsibilities
as how he designs something that will make people’s lives
easier and more convenient. It explains why he begins each
work by trying to work out a problem, and seek for possible
ways to find the right solution, raising questions and finding
solutions systematically to attain the most suitable answer.
‘Born from the earth, live with the earth and return to the
earth’ is a simple yet profound concept that has been a
significant inspiration behind the creation of ceramic products
under the brand, ‘Benjametha Ceramic’. Back to the beginning
of his career, Emsophian Benjametha entered the design
industry as a furniture designer for Planet 2001 with a degree
in architecture from the School of Architecture, Sripatum
University, a Fine Arts degree from École des Beaux-arts de
Versailles and a Furniture Design degree from École nationale
supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.
What’s distinctive about his work process is the integration of
experiences in design, art and personal interests to develop
and create ceramic products of unique characteristics, infused
with religious philosophy, vernacular art and cultures. Nature’s
universal appeal is brought in to make each piece more
complete. Each work stands out for its organic form with
nature being an evident inspiration. The utilization of design
skills develops products that are reflective of local identity,
culture, and faith while still being highly innovative and
deeply rooted in its origin. Such an approach enables
sustainable conservation, development and inheritance of
wisdom to later generations. Apart from Benjametha
Ceramic, he also works with Pattani’s local communities from
the development of handicraft products for ‘Derndin Craft’
brand, the founding of ‘LEPAS,’ a locally made batik fabric to
the building of ‘Baan Derndin,’ a creative space he intends to
operate as a community’s inspirational hub.
