One of the most anticipated programs of Architect Expo
is none other than ‘ASA Clinic,’ the activity that opens
up a special space to welcome the general public to
consult with ASA’s team of volunteering architects
about all house and construction-related issues. For
this year’s ‘ASA Clinic’ pavilion, the association pairs
up architects from the northeastern and northern
territory of Thailand, S OO N T A R E E + led by
Jakkapan Bussai and Wasitti Lathuli, and designer and
founder of ’carpenter, Veerada Siripong. The design
combines Siripong’s design philosophy and her attempt
to create and bring more value to leftover wood scraps
with creativity as a helping hand alongside sustainable
use of natural resources, zero waste approach and
circular economy, to the passion-driven design process
of S OO N T A R E E +. Equilibrium is the final destination
of their creative collaboration.
An idea is proposed about the use of a triangle. The
form is closely associated with the wooden scale found
in ’carpenter’s products and easy to use for its
geometrical characteristics that can be assembled
infinitely. Siripong chooses the material, which
represents the characteristics of its own circular life
cycle and reusability after the exhibition comes to an
end. The founder of ’carpenter passes the concept
over to Bussai and Lathuli, who translate ’carpenter’s
distinctive character into the form of an equilateral
triangle with all three sides of one-meter length. The
triangular parts are designed into a modular system
and assembled into the pavilion’s architectural form.
Thanks to its modular design, the structure can be
easily manufactured and transported, with less carbon
footprint created throughout the entirety of the
production process.
While sculptural in character, the ASA Clinic pavilion
still holds the main functionality of a work of
architecture. Built of OSB boards made of wood strands
and sawdust, fabric scraps from the brand ‘moreloop’,
and transparent polycarbonate panels that are
available in the market, the pavilion houses a space
that is partially enclosed and partially open, making
the spatial experience even more interesting. In
addition, the OSB wood scraps from material cutting
are turned into the tables, chairs and aprons used
inside the pavilion. All the materials can be reused for
other functional purposes without a single piece of
waste material left behind, which is what ’carpenter’s
environmentally friendly design philosophy is all about.
Inside, the pavilion houses a relaxing, aesthetically
pleasing and friendly functional space with the
atmosphere that is akin to a hangout session at a cafe
with friends. Such vibe makes the space feel more
welcoming, inviting visitors to sit down and consult
with the volunteering architects in a casual and
amicable conversation. The graphic design on the floor
and walls is actually the scale, provided to help visitors
compare sizes easily while explaining their issues. This
functional gimmick is also congruent with the concepts
that ’carpenter’s has always promoted such as #เร้อ็ง
สเกลไว้ใจผม (Trust me, I am a carpenter.) and #รักษ์โลก
เริมทีตััวเรา (Saving the world starts with oneself.).
