One of the most anticipated programs of Architect Expo<br />

is none other than ‘ASA Clinic,’ the activity that opens<br />

up a special space to welcome the general public to<br />

consult <strong>with</strong> ASA’s team of volunteering architects<br />

about all house and construction-related issues. For<br />

this year’s ‘ASA Clinic’ pavilion, the association pairs<br />

up architects from the northeastern and northern<br />

territory of Thailand, S OO N T A R E E + led by<br />

Jakkapan Bussai and Wasitti Lathuli, and designer and<br />

founder of ’carpenter, Veerada Siripong. The design<br />

combines Siripong’s design philosophy and her attempt<br />

to create and bring more value to leftover wood scraps<br />

<strong>with</strong> creativity as a helping hand alongside sustainable<br />

use of natural resources, zero waste approach and<br />

circular economy, to the passion-driven design process<br />

of S OO N T A R E E +. Equilibrium is the final destination<br />

of their creative collaboration.<br />

An idea is proposed about the use of a triangle. The<br />

form is closely associated <strong>with</strong> the wooden scale found<br />

in ’carpenter’s products and easy to use for its<br />

geometrical characteristics that can be assembled<br />

infinitely. Siripong chooses the material, which<br />

represents the characteristics of its own circular life<br />

cycle and reusability after the exhibition comes to an<br />

end. The founder of ’carpenter passes the concept<br />

over to Bussai and Lathuli, who translate ’carpenter’s<br />

distinctive character into the form of an equilateral<br />

triangle <strong>with</strong> all three sides of one-meter length. The<br />

triangular parts are designed into a modular system<br />

and assembled into the pavilion’s architectural form.<br />

Thanks to its modular design, the structure can be<br />

easily manufactured and transported, <strong>with</strong> less carbon<br />

footprint created throughout the entirety of the<br />

production process.<br />

While sculptural in character, the ASA Clinic pavilion<br />

still holds the main functionality of a work of<br />

architecture. Built of OSB boards made of wood strands<br />

and sawdust, fabric scraps from the brand ‘moreloop’,<br />

and transparent polycarbonate panels that are<br />

available in the market, the pavilion houses a space<br />

that is partially enclosed and partially open, making<br />

the spatial experience even more interesting. In<br />

addition, the OSB wood scraps from material cutting<br />

are turned into the tables, chairs and aprons used<br />

inside the pavilion. All the materials can be reused for<br />

other functional purposes <strong>with</strong>out a single piece of<br />

waste material left behind, which is what ’carpenter’s<br />

environmentally friendly design philosophy is all about.<br />

Inside, the pavilion houses a relaxing, aesthetically<br />

pleasing and friendly functional space <strong>with</strong> the<br />

atmosphere that is akin to a hangout session at a cafe<br />

<strong>with</strong> friends. Such vibe makes the space feel more<br />

welcoming, inviting visitors to sit down and consult<br />

<strong>with</strong> the volunteering architects in a casual and<br />

amicable conversation. The graphic design on the floor<br />

and walls is actually the scale, provided to help visitors<br />

compare sizes easily while explaining their issues. This<br />

functional gimmick is also congruent <strong>with</strong> the concepts<br />

that ’carpenter’s has always promoted such as #เร้อ็ง<br />

สเกลไว้ใจผม (Trust me, I am a carpenter.) and #รักษ์โลก<br />

เริมทีตััวเรา (Saving the world starts <strong>with</strong> oneself.).<br />
