Prachya Sukkaew set up his architecture practice ‘Nuzen
Company Limited’ in 2004 with the intention to create works
of architecture from an experimental design language and
approach. The ‘nu’ in the moniker ‘Nuzen’ represents the west,
the newness, the methodical thought and solution-finding
processes, which are what Sukkaew devises to propel the
operation of his office. ‘Zen’ connotes the abstract element in
his works. He believes that the Thai vernacular and traditional
architecture may not be the only answer to the kind of architecture
that can truly cater to users’ actual demands, but
the simplicity, intricateness and unpretentiousness of the Zen
philosophy that should be used to help with the interpretation
instead of the immediate fusion of the two architectural styles
into a work of architecture.
Sukkaew’s and Nuzen’s approach to architecture begins with
an understanding of the location and being open to information
from all possible aspects of a project. He approaches a project
by treating it as blank space to allow the obtained data to
freely propel the design team’s work process, before ultimately
leading to the materialization of the design that answers to
the project’s functional and aesthetic merits as well as users’
demands and expectations. Nuzen’s areas of expertise include
urban planning, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture,
graphic design and everything that can have
physical and visual impacts on a project.
Sumet Yordkaew is an academically trained architect from the
Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University. But with his
love for graphic design, he decided to open a small design
studio with his friends with the hope to be able to make a
living out of something they were passionate about. While
things did not turn out as planned, it did lead him to a new
path as the founder of ‘Minimal Gallery’. This alternative space
combines the spatial program of a beverage bar to that of an
art gallery. People who come to Minimal Gallery can enjoy
their experiences and dialogues about music, contemporary
art from visual arts, to film and digital art while the space
welcomes painting exhibitions on a regular basis.
Minimal Gallery also brought Yordkaew back to music, one of
things he always loves and is passionate about. He founded
‘Minimal Records,’ a music label that he intends to be an
assembly ground for independent musicians and artists in
Chiang Mai. He manages and operates both the space and
label with the hope to encourage local artists to use their
hometown as the operating base of their musical career, and
being a part of the support that will strengthen the community
of local artists and music industry. Yordkaew is currently
spearheading three businesses under the Minimal Group
including Minimal Records, Minimal Bar and graphic design
studio, ‘Minimal Studio’. He is also a member of the band,
‘Migrate To The Ocean,’ alongside his role as an animation
and visual effect lecturer at College of Art Media and Technology,
Chiang Mai University (CMU).
