COVID-19 remains one of the major issues that the
global community continues to prioritize. Over two
years into the pandemic, the extensive period has
caused constant changes in rules, measures and
protocols, re-strategized from passive preventive
approach to acceptance and adjustment that will allow
humans and infectious viruses to coexist, which seems
to be the most viable and realistic option in the time
when the spread still sees no end in sight. This similar
mindset is what behind ‘Co-with COVID’ pavilion.
D KWA Design Studio led by Sarin Nilsonthi together
with Asst. Prof. Jehabdulloh Jehsorhoh, artist and
founder of Patani Artspace, develop the design of the
pavilion toward this trajectory, basing on their processing
and analysis of the current situation.
The two collaborators propose the aforementioned
concept through the design of the structure where
fabric is used as the principal material to define
physical boundaries of the interior program. The space
is divided into different portions with the storytelling
executed through a thoughtfully curated order of
spatial experience. The program hosts a series of
contents such as the question and answer session
about humans’ ways of living and coexistence in the
time of pandemic. The design aims to help viewers to
realize the inevitable rules of nature of cycles of all
living creatures. Physically, the pavilion picks up on
the unique identity of the artistic elements found in the
intricate use of patterns and colors, delicate features
of vernacular characteristics of the architecture of
Pattani province where Jehsorhoh is from. Such
intention brings an even more profound meaning to
the design through purposeful expression of lines,
aesthetics and artistic concept.
The design team makes use of the materials’ physical
effects and recreates the relationship between human
beings and other living creatures with the use of
lighting tubes and a reflective material to represent
the contagious viruses. Such a relationship is a
metaphorical comparison of a parallel coexistence and
inevitable codependency of all lives, from the day of
their inception to their return to nature. All the
materials can be reused after the event is over.
The Co-with COVID pavilion plays with the materials’
physical attributes, and created as a result is the
upbeat, lively and dynamic architectural structure
and interior program. This transformation of an
empty space into a pavilion proposes new
possibilities of moving forward into the New Normal
era with a sense of stability in the ongoing
pandemic, and an understanding in the true nature
of things, which can ultimately benefit one’s life at
both an individual and societal level. At the same
time, the pavilion is a manifestation of the role and
ability of design and art as a tool that can be utilized
to create a better understanding and solutions in
the time of crisis, which will ultimately lead one to
appropriately adapt to a more practical way to live
the happiest life possible in the future.
