With a background in architecture from Rajamangala
University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL), Sarin Nilsonthi
begins his path as an architect at Plank Rich Architect, an
architecture firm where he spent seven full years building
experiences in design and architectural practice. He later left
the job to establish his own Chiang Mai-based ‘D KWA Design
Studio’ in 2010. D KWA (The Thai translation of the word ‘dee
– kwa is ‘better’) isn’t only the name of this studio, but the
mindset he has for his own practice and biggest objective,
which is to always develop and create better works of architecture.
Nilsonthi often starts a project with an intention to understand
users’ needs and contexts. His expertise in small-scale
residential design focuses on the values and functionalities
of space, and creating a living space with maximized
functional efficiency achieved through the use and
interpretation of locally available and inexpensive materials
to create works of unique identity while still celebrating the
materials’ true physical attributes. Practicality, timeless livability
and aesthetic values, are something that can be found
in every dimension of his architecture.
From a student of Visual Arts Department, Faculty of Fine and
Applied Arts, Prince of Songkla University (Pattani Campus),
Asst. Prof. Jehabdulloh Jehsorhoh pursued his artistic path
with a master’s degree in Thai Art at the Faculty of Painting,
Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. His artistic
process and body of works is based on the 3A principles, with
each ‘a’ rooted in the word ‘art.’ The first ‘A’ is Art, or the
materialization of a work of art, the second ‘A’ is Artist or the
incubation of an artist to build and express their identity, and
the last ‘A’ refers to Art space, which is essentially the creation
of art spaces to facilitate dialogues between art, artists and
people from all sectors in a society with dreams, knowledge
and ideals as the driving forces of his artistic creations.
In addition to his position as a full-time lecturer at the Visual
Arts Department of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Prince
of Songkla University (Pattani Campus), Jehsorhoh is
spearheading ‘Patani Artspace,’ an art space he founded in
2014 after the tenth anniversary of the insurgency in the three
southernmost provinces in Thailand. He intended for the
building with the 17/7, Amphoe Nong Chik district address of
Pattani to be a space that brings people shared mentality and
memories of the long history and exquisite cultures and traditions
of the region, presenting the positive image of Pattani
through creative processes, and nurtures new budding talents
in the art world. He hopes for the space to be a platform that
helps artists from both inside and outside of Pattani to grow
and prosper on the paths that they choose, and through their
works and roles, become a part of the peace-making process
in the area in the future.
