Main stage
Puritat Cholpratin X Panachai Chaijirarat / Punyisa Sinraparatsamee
Panachai Chaijirarat and Punyisa Sinraparatsamee,
share their interest in various forms and dimensions
of art, from contemporary to vernacular, to different
interpretations of history, society and cultures through
artistic presentation from the past to present in the
northeastern region of Thailand. With his personal
tastes and architectural background, Puritat
Cholpratin of Thammada Architect from Phitsanulok,
translates the distinctive characteristics of the two
creators’ areas of knowledge into the design of
Architect Expo 2022’s Main stage, taking inspiration
from the unique spiral patterns of Udon Thani’s famous
Ban Chiang Pottery.
After researching available information and stories
behind the spiral patterns, something that Chaijirarat
and Sinraparatsamee are both interested in, the two
founders of Noir Row Art Space in Udon Thani province
discover that the spiral pattern or ‘kwan’ have been
closely connected to a human body for the longest time.
Spirals also hold a symbolic significance that has been
associated with humans’ beliefs in the afterlife.
Cholpratin develops the pattern into the architectural
design of the pavilion they agreeably name ‘Spiral.’
With the intention to use materials that are available
in Udon Thani province, hold certain beliefs that are
non-scientific yet symbolically meaningful, following
the expo’s ‘CO-WITH CREATORS’ theme, cotton threads
dyed in earth color by Udon Nakin, a group of artisans
with the expertise in natural dyed Mudmee textile, is
chosen to take the center stage of the creation of the
space.
The key attributes of the material is the color of the
fabric obtained through the use of Naka soil and the
yellow of marigold flowers that went through the rituals
performed on the sacred ground of KhamChanod
Temple, alongside leaves of mango trees, true indigo
trees and Sappanwood trees growing in the Ban Dung’s
district of Udon Thani. The design team utilizes a
construction technique that formulates the pavilion’s
architectural mass with dyed cotton threads. The
arranged threads follow the frame designed into a thin
partition wall, encircling the entire space.
The parallel arrangement of the cotton threads creates
the airiness and weightlessness that can be layered
and superimposed. The Main stage functions as a
multifunctional space that can flexibly accommodate
different types of activities. The space also brings a
fun, upbeat energy to the event, and at the same time,
reflecting the coexistence between local communities
and natural surroundings they are a part of.
