ASA Shop
Charif Lona x Sareongrong Wongsavun
“Not just a space for readers but for everyone,” the
statement encapsulates the idea Charif Lona and
Sareongrong Wongsavun have for the creation of ‘ASA
Shop,” the retail space selling books, publications and
products by the Association of Siamese Architects
under Royal Patronage, and other architects and
creators. Named ‘ASA SHOP PLAYBRARY,’ the design
of the pavilion is conceived from the questions of ‘how
can a commercial space or a book shop can function
as a multifunctional space with a variety of functional
purposes, and how can such a space attract visitors
from various professional disciplines whether it be
designers, contractors, business investors, students
or the general public, and be used according to each
person’s interest.” Lona and Wongsavun answer these
questions with the design of the pavilion as an
experience space, which is based on the concept of a
space of fun, learning and sharing that opens its door
to everyone.
The interior space combines functionalities of a library,
bookstore and playground into an experience/retail
space that offers visitors enjoyable shopping
experiences while sitting, standing or talking, or even
while appreciating the creativity behind the designed
spatial program.
The product display is arranged as an integral element
of the pavilion’s functional program. The design team
intends to play with user experiences and people’s
return to normalcy of using and sharing public spaces
after over two years of being kept in isolation and
under social distancing measures. Users are given the
freedom to obtain a product or initiate an activity inside
ASA Shop by specifically or randomly choosing how
they want to use the space, consequently generating
functionalities and exchanges of experiences within
the curated space.
The distinctive and pivotal feature of ASA SHOP PLAY-
BRARY is the three-part special program where each
section is designed to fulfill a different functional
purpose, from the zone where commercial activities
take place, the lounging area, and product browsing
section. The program follows the ‘Free Space’ and
‘CO-WITH CREATORS’ theme of Architect Expo 2022
while the pavilion is built of materials used in
architectural, interior and product design such as
C-LINT wall frames, tarps, flooring material called
Checker plates, anti-slippery sheets and rubber tiles,
to name a few, all of which can be reused after the
event comes to an end.
