Sunman Mukam X Ratikorn Tongsiri
The exhibition space for the 2022’s ASA Public work
has Sunman Mukam, the architect who spearheads
Muslim Architect For Community (MAFC) overseeing
the design. Mukam begins the design development
process by finding a point of connection between his
own perspective as an architect and the characters,
beliefs and ideas of Ratikorn Tongsiri, a creative
ล worker who is both the founder of Pa Na Come Home
and one of the members of Thai i-san Farmers. The
pavilion is designed to represent two of the country’s
most important professions, farmers and builders,
whose physical labor and skills hold significant values
to the strength of Thailand’s economic system. Their
contributions exist as a key mechanism in the
production sector, behind the manufacturing of every
product and process with direct and pivotal impacts on
the country’s economic stability or weakness.

Featured inside the pavilion are stories of Thai i-san
Farmers, a group of young generation farmers who
share the same goal of pushing forward the organic
artisanal farming that inherits the beauty and benefits
of their predecessors’ wisdom. Their missions include
the collection and conservation of indigenous rice
varieties while improving and developing new rice
cultivars that can meet the rising consumption
demands to maintain food stability as well as
biodiversity. The exhibition displays over 150 preserved
rice varieties from the Thai i-san Farmers’ collection,
telling the important story about the diversity of rice
and the connection between how such a variety and
the ancestors’ inherited cultures and wisdom, passed
on to the current generation of farmers. The highlight
is the seven new rice cultivars developed and improved
by the Thai i-san Farmers through an at least eight-year
long process, resulting in the rice varieties that can
ensure prosperous produce of beautiful-looking, tasty
and glutinous rice achieved through a natural and
easy-to-maintain organic farming system.
The design employs basic construction skills and the
use of simple materials, creating the built structure
that conveys the artistic merits and beauty from the
hands of skilled builders. What the pavilion also hopes
to communicate is Mukam’s and Tongsiri’s sentiments
and interpretations of farmers and builders as
professions that hold equal importance and roles in
Thai society, as a vital force that keeps the country
progressing and moving forward. Such an intention is
the reason why the pavilion is named ‘Farmer and
Builder’ for the moniker embodies the key message
that the design team wishes to send out to the public.
