Charif Lona is a young architect from Yala. With a bachelor
degree in interior design from the School of Fine and Applied
Arts, Bangkok University, and a master’s degree in Creative
Urban Practices from Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, Lona
is currently the design director and founder of ‘Studio Act of
Kindness,’ a design practice that he officially founded in 2016.
The word ‘kindness’ isn’t just a part of the name of his studio
but the philosophy that reflects who he is, his thought process,
way of thinking, honesty, sincerity and diversity.
He’s a designer with a keen interest in art, stories of the world,
interpretations and combinations of interdisciplinary
knowledge. Lona’s work method and role for Studio Act of
Kindness is an attempt to navigate every possible dimension
of a project, from utility, functionality, cultural and commercial
context while still paying equal attention to the aesthetics of
space, and every miscellaneous detail of which each work is
made. In addition to architecture, interior design and spatial
design, his portfolio also extends to art, fashion, product
design and furniture. Past works include the design of Kiatnakin
Bank Boutique and Magnum Cafe, as well as collaborations
with globally renowned Thai fashion house, Sretsis,
and the Great Britain’s House of Hackney.
Sareongrong Wongsavun loves nature and design. He is the
youngest son of the late famous Thai writer and journalist,
’Rong Wongsavun with a degree in architecture from Chiang
Mai University. He began developing products using natural
material with a notebook using paper that was made from
parts of banana trees. Well aware of the upside of banana
trees being an indigenous ubiquitous plant in Thailand with
every part that can be put into use, Wongsavun found a way
to make the paper made of this multifunctional plant more
durable while containing a unique textural details to create a
notebook with one-of-a-kind design. After this little project,
he went to study his master’s degree in marketing at Dallas
Baptist University and ended up working in the United States
as a professional architect for three years before returning
home to Thailand to pursue his dreams in creating
environmentally friendly products. He opened ‘Re-Leaf Studio’
where he worked specifically in developing waste materials
into unique-looking design products. He launched ‘Rubber
Killer,’ the brand that uses leftover inner tubes of automobile
tires as the material of messenger bags.Rubber Killer is
positioned to be a small business operated as acommunity-based
enterprise, producing bags that are made by hand by local
workers in Chiang Mai with the main objective to improve the
lives of the people in the local community. The Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle process lays the ground for the brand’s
product development, which uses waste materials found in
nature and everyday surroundings. Under Wongsavun’s
managerial and creative direction, Rubber Killer has birthed
over 100 designs of products from tote bags, messenger
bags, fanny packs and wallets to furniture including several
other lifestyle products.
