Exploring Geology Using Google Earth

1. Visit digital.wwnorton.com/geolabmanual4

2. Go to the Geotours tile to download Google Earth Pro and the accompanying

Geotours exercises file.

Expand the Geotour07 folder in Google

Earth by clicking the triangle to the left of

the folder icon. Check and double-click the

New England Metamorphic Zones overlay

to see a metamorphic grade map draped

over the Appalachian Mountains of New

England (note that you can select the overlay

and use the transparency slider at the bottom

of the Places panel to make the overlay semitransparent).

(a) Check and double-click the Grade

placemark. If you traveled north from the

(a) placemark, would you go into higher

or lower metamorphic grade rocks?

(b) Check and double-click the West & East placemarks. Based on your answer to (a), would the metamorphic core

(the zone of highest metamorphism) of this region be near the West or East placemark?

(c) Check and double-click the Schist placemark. Based on the location of the placemark, what are the red minerals in

the schist pictured in the placemark balloon?

(d) Considering the area covered by the New England Metamorphic Zones overlay, what type of metamorphism likely

produced these metamorphic rocks?
