EXERCISE 15.4

Landforms at the Terminus of a Continental Glacier

Name:

Course:

Section:

Date:

FIGURE 15.7 is a DEM of southeastern New York and southwestern Connecticut showing the irregular glacial topography

at the southernmost extent of continental glaciation in North America. Long Island is composed largely of till and outwash

deposited during the advance and retreat of two continental glaciers. This makes the topography of the area more complex

than that shown in Figure 15.5, but the features that formed at the two glacial termini are recognizable.

(a) Outline or otherwise identify the two terminal moraines, the southernmost outwash plain, and the outwash and

glacial deltas deposited between the terminal moraines during a time of glacial retreat. Use different colors to

separate features deposited during the two different glacial advances.

(b) Which of the two moraines is younger? Explain your reasoning.
