Emergent shorelines look very different from submergent shorelines. Examine the following topographic maps showing
part of the Atlantic coast in Maine (FIG. 17.5) and part of the Pacific coast in California (FIG. 17.6). One of these coasts
is a typical submergent shoreline, the other a classic emergent shoreline. Apply your geologic reasoning to determine
which is which.
(a) Compare and contrast the shapes of the two shorelines.
(b) Which of these shorelines is emergent and which is submergent? Explain your reasoning.
