Exploring Geology Using Google Earth

1. Visit digital.wwnorton.com/geolabmanual4

2. Go to the Geotours tile to download Google Earth Pro and the accompanying

Geotours exercises file.

Expand the Geotour08 folder in Google Earth by clicking the triangle to the left of the folder icon. Toggle a global location

grid on by using the View > Grid menu. To change the type of grid shown, on a Mac go to Google Earth Pro > Preferences

> 3D View or on a PC go to Tools > Options > 3D View and then select Decimal Degrees (DD), Degrees, Minutes,

Seconds (DMS), or Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM).

(a) Set Google Earth to display the DMS grid, and then check and double-click the Galapagos Islands placemark to fly

to the Equator. Click on the Ruler tool icon and use the Path tab, and measure the distance (km) for 1° longitude

and 1° latitude at this location.
