University of Sunderland Travel Plan Update Measure 7: Parking Management System Timescale 5.2.8 Measure 8 – University Vehicle Fleet & Business Travel 2007/08 Expectation The University was to undertake a full review of the vehicle fleet and where possible reduce the number of vehicles, reduce their level of usage and potentially invest in new, more economically friendly vehicles. For business travel, in n 2007/08 2007/08, through the Higher gher Education Carbon Management Programme, the University had started monitoring business travel and its impact on the environment. Through further development and implementation of the travel plan, the University was to continue to monitor plane and train travel while gaining a better understanding of car based business travel.. The University was also to investigate and consult staff on ways to reduce the impact of business travel on the environment, consid considering reducing the use of flights for UK travel, promoting the use of more sustainable forms of transport and encouraging the use of phone / teleconferencing facilities where possible. Progress to 2009/10 /10 and moving forward to 2012/13 The University is currently rently reviewing its vehicle fleet and is looking to reduce the total number of vehicles in the fleet. This includes investigating the possibility of at least one hybrid vehicle. A breakdown of the current University fleet of vehicles can be found in Appendix pendix J. As part of the Campus re-development, development, the University is also considering installing parking bays with electric charging points points. . This would tie in with the building work on the City Campus Travel Hub where there is the potential to install a double charging point in the visitor parking area. The University has also developed a comprehensive Business Travel Policy and Procedures Procedures. The policy provides guidance on how to travel between University campuses, information on which modes of transport can be used for business travel, guidance on overseas travel, corporate hospitality and procedures for claiming expenses. The University continues to actively encourage staff to travel on business by more sustainabl sustainable modes of transport. A recent survey undertaken by the Facilities Department and completed by over 300 members of staff indicated that cars are often brought to work as they are needed for a meeting during the day. Therefore, the University is investigating the potential for implementing an Option C Car Club. The scheme would enable the University to place a car(s) on the University Campus for the exclusive use of employees for business use use. . University of Sunderland Travel Plan Update Measure 8: University Vehicle Fleet & Business Travel Timescale 5.2.9 Measure 9 – Reducing the need to Travel 2007/08 Expectation The use of phone and teleconferencing facilities was to be encouraged, where possible to reduce business travel. The University would also consult staff and partners on the introduction and promotion of more flexible wor working practices such as home working and compressed hours to reduce the need for staff to travel to and from work every day. Progress to 2009/10 /10 and moving forward to 2012/13 The University does offer er a video conferencing facility for staff, although the facilities have not been actively promoted to staff as an alternative to business travel. The Travel Plan Coordinator Coordinator, in conjunction with the HR Department, will attempt to gather additional data and feedback on whether staff would be prepare prepared d to use these facilities and where possible will promote their use more actively. The University will continue to encourage staff to reduce their need to travel by promoting the use of phone / teleconference facilities, flexible hours and home working. This is might take the form of a new home working policy policy. By 2007/08, the University had already set up a car share database for sta staff and students. The system used the Liftshare ftshare software and also offered walking, cycling and taxi buddy schemes. The take up was slow and the focus was to be placed aced on increasing awareness and incentives to ensure that staff and students sign up to and use the system. The Travel Plan Focus Group planned to facilitate car share workshop workshops, where staff and students who drove to the campuses and lived in the same areas would be invited to meet and discuss the possibility of sharing a lift to the University. The University also planned to consider the provision of dedicated car share parking spaces for staff and would liaise with the Council tto o ensure that other car share schemes which might be implemented by other employers in the city link into the existing University system. The University would also investigate the provision of a guaranteed ride home scheme for staff.
