University of Sunderland Travel Plan Update
Student Student Parking Parking Permits Permits
The Student Pay and Display Permit is only available to students who don't live in University
Halls of Residence. Displaying a valid Pay and Display permit entitles the student to the
discounted rate of 20p per hour or £1 per day. Students cannot park in staff only car parks.
Students wishing to park their vehicles at their contracted Halls of Residence must apply for a
Residential Permit. . Displaying this permit entitles the holder to free parking at their contracted
Hall but parking on the University campuses between 08:00 and 17:00 is not permitted as it is
considered that students do not need to travel by car since the University provides the free
Campus Bus service. Residential students are therefore not eligible for a Student Pay aand
Display
Permit.
Utilisation of Parking Parking Income Income
Any ny parking income surplus is invested by the University on travel and environmental initiatives
and this has taken place since the introduction of the new pay and display parking system in
2006. This parking income surplus is currently used to fund the following:
• University Campus Bus;
• New Sunderland Shuttle Electric Bu Bus s Service (in partnership with Nexus and Sunderland City
Council);
• University of Sunderland £40 Metro staff and student travel pass;
• A University wide roll out of a recycling programme which included new recycle bins and
hand dryers; and
• Update of f the University Travel Plan and Parking Strategy Strategy.
The parking income surplus is expected to increase year on year in the short to medium term, as
the cost of parking at the he University increases. The proposed increase ease in parking costs is
discussed in more detail in the Updated University Parking Strategy Strategy.
