for Rating industrial noise affecting mixed residential <strong>and</strong> industrial areas [2] ”.<br />

Minimum Requirements For Fire Suppressi<strong>on</strong><br />

Proprietors <strong>of</strong> commercial kitchens are under a duty to ensure that <strong>the</strong> fire precauti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

meet <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “Fire Precauti<strong>on</strong>s (Workplace) Regulati<strong>on</strong>s 1997 [3] .<br />

Maintenance<br />

Proprietors <strong>of</strong> commercial kitchens have a duty to ensure that <strong>the</strong> ventilati<strong>on</strong> system<br />

serving <strong>the</strong> respective premises are maintained <strong>and</strong> operated effectively. Good<br />

maintenance is a prerequisite for ensuring that a system complies with Best Practicable<br />

Means under statutory nuisance provisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> will form a key element <strong>of</strong> any scheme<br />

designed to minimise harm to <strong>the</strong> amenity under planning regulati<strong>on</strong>. Good<br />

maintenance is required by <strong>the</strong> food hygiene regulati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> will also minimise <strong>the</strong> risk<br />

<strong>of</strong> fire. The recommended cleaning period for extract ductwork is:<br />

Heavy Use 12-16 Hours Per Day 3 M<strong>on</strong>thly<br />

Moderate Use 6-12 Hours Per Day 6 M<strong>on</strong>thly<br />

Light Use 2-6 Hours Per Day Annually<br />

Recommendati<strong>on</strong>s for maintenance <strong>of</strong> odour c<strong>on</strong>trol system include:<br />

• System employing fine filtrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> carb<strong>on</strong> filtrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

o Change fine filters every two weeks.<br />

o Change carb<strong>on</strong> filters every 4 to 6 m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

• Use a system employing ESP <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in line abatement.<br />

Clean every 2-6 m<strong>on</strong>ths<br />
