3.2.3 Regulati<strong>on</strong>s/guidance relating to fire safety<br />
The Building Regulati<strong>on</strong>s [10] Part B relates to general fire safety, <strong>and</strong> Part J relates to<br />
protecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> buildings <strong>from</strong> fire risk due to heating appliances. These must,<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore be complied with by commercial kitchens in order to obtain Building<br />
Regulati<strong>on</strong>s approval. Fur<strong>the</strong>r to this legislati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> establishment will also be<br />
required to comply with <strong>the</strong> Fire Precauti<strong>on</strong>s (Workplace) Regulati<strong>on</strong>s 1997 [3] , which<br />
relate to general fire safety.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Guidance</str<strong>on</strong>g> in terms <strong>of</strong> general fire safety is provided by <strong>the</strong> Building Services<br />
Research <strong>and</strong> Informati<strong>on</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir publicati<strong>on</strong> ‘Fire Risk Assessment -<br />
Catering Extract Ventilati<strong>on</strong>’ [25] . This provides practical guidance <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> factors<br />
influencing <strong>the</strong> likelihood <strong>of</strong> a fire in a kitchen ventilati<strong>on</strong> system <strong>and</strong> how to<br />
undertake an appropriate risk assessment.<br />
More specific guidance relating to fire suppressi<strong>on</strong> in ventilati<strong>on</strong> systems <strong>and</strong> duct<br />
work is provided in <strong>the</strong> HVCA St<strong>and</strong>ard DW 171 [21] .<br />
