2.2 <strong>Noise</strong><br />

2.2.1 <strong>Noise</strong> <strong>and</strong> nuisance<br />

<strong>Noise</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main envir<strong>on</strong>mental problems in Europe, potentially affecting<br />

people’s health <strong>and</strong> behaviour. <strong>Noise</strong> is generated by several types <strong>of</strong> source such<br />

as transport, indoor <strong>and</strong> outdoor equipment <strong>and</strong> industrial activity. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />

commercial kitchens <strong>the</strong> noise generated by <strong>the</strong>m can affect employees <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

surrounding neighbourhood.<br />

Informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> noise nuisance <strong>from</strong> commercial kitchens is limited. The CIEH<br />

have carried out surveys <strong>of</strong> Local Authorities to quantify <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> complaints made<br />

relating to noise nuisance in general. Table 2.4 lists <strong>the</strong> informati<strong>on</strong> for Commercial/<br />

Leisure activities for 2002-2003 in Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Wales. The survey results:<br />

• do not differentiate between types <strong>of</strong> commercial/leisure activities;<br />

• do not specifically identify commercial kitchens; <strong>and</strong><br />

• relate to all complaints received <strong>and</strong> not <strong>on</strong>ly ‘justified’ complaints.<br />

It is anticipated that noise problems associated with commercial kitchens will form<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly a small proporti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> complaints received <strong>and</strong> will also form a small<br />

proporti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘sources complained <strong>of</strong>’.<br />
