• Disposable pleated filter acting as a sec<strong>on</strong>dary grease filter to protect <strong>the</strong> main<br />

pre-filters. This filtrati<strong>on</strong> stage may be manufactured <strong>from</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-woven syn<strong>the</strong>tic<br />

fire retardant material.<br />

• Medium efficiency bag filter ideally achieving a capture efficiency <strong>of</strong> 95%.<br />

• Absolute filter ideally achieving a capture efficiency <strong>of</strong> 99%.<br />

With high efficiency or absolute filters high pressure drops can be expected. This<br />

system will not deal with <strong>the</strong> gaseous phase odours <strong>and</strong> may be preceded by a<br />

carb<strong>on</strong> filter. The filtrati<strong>on</strong> step protects <strong>the</strong> carb<strong>on</strong> filter <strong>from</strong> becoming fouled with<br />

grease <strong>and</strong> particulate matter. Plate 5 (Annex E) shows a pleated filter <strong>and</strong> a bag<br />

filter.<br />

Various filter types <strong>and</strong> classificati<strong>on</strong>s are available. A list <strong>of</strong> available filters are<br />

summarised in Table 4.6 toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong>ir rating <strong>and</strong> quoted efficiencies.<br />

4.7.3 Electrostatic precipitati<strong>on</strong><br />

Electrostatic separators (ESP) are used to separate solid or liquid particles <strong>from</strong><br />

ventilati<strong>on</strong> air. The particles distributed in <strong>the</strong> gas are electrostatically charged so<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y stick to collecti<strong>on</strong> plates. Within an ESP <strong>the</strong>re are four individual stages:<br />

• charging <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> particles in <strong>the</strong> i<strong>on</strong> field;<br />

• transport <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> charged particle to <strong>the</strong> collecting plate;<br />

• collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> film formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> collecting plate; <strong>and</strong><br />

• removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dust film <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> collecting plate.<br />
