2.2.2 Properties <strong>of</strong> noise<br />
<strong>Noise</strong> is any unwanted, unpleasant or harmful sound created by human activities.<br />
Different people perceive it in different ways. Human hearing detects frequencies<br />
<strong>from</strong> 20Hz to 20kHz with sound pressure levels ranging typically <strong>from</strong> 0 dB (normal<br />
threshold <strong>of</strong> hearing) up to 140 dB (i.e. near a military aircraft taking <strong>of</strong>f).<br />
Sound arises as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vibrati<strong>on</strong>-excitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> an elastic medium <strong>and</strong> resultant<br />
propagati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> energy through <strong>the</strong> medium in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> waves. It results in <strong>the</strong><br />
excitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eardrum, <strong>and</strong> hence its percepti<strong>on</strong>. The sound waves in <strong>the</strong> medium<br />
can propagate several shapes including spherical <strong>and</strong> cylindrical forms depending <strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> source.<br />
Frequency c<strong>on</strong>tent: <strong>Noise</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>sidered t<strong>on</strong>al if <strong>the</strong>re <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e frequency is<br />
predominant in <strong>the</strong> spectrum (<strong>and</strong> its harm<strong>on</strong>ics) or broadb<strong>and</strong>, where <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> over many frequencies.<br />
Decibels <strong>and</strong> levels: The resp<strong>on</strong>se <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human being to sound is approximately<br />
proporti<strong>on</strong>al to <strong>the</strong> logarithm <strong>of</strong> energy. Therefore a change <strong>of</strong> energy <strong>from</strong> 2-8 units<br />
is perceived as being similar to a change <strong>from</strong> 8-32 units. To represent this<br />
proporti<strong>on</strong>al characteristic decibels are used. As <strong>the</strong> energy levels are proporti<strong>on</strong>al to<br />
<strong>the</strong> pressure it is usually represented in relati<strong>on</strong> to a reference pressure level in <strong>the</strong><br />
following form:<br />
= 20 log<br />
