To achieve <strong>the</strong>se limits it is recommended that [29] :<br />

• a visual inspecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ventilati<strong>on</strong> system be carried out at least <strong>on</strong>ce a<br />

week. All metal surfaces should be checked to ensure that <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

accumulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> grease or dirt <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>re is no surface damage;<br />

• cooker hoods <strong>and</strong> grease filters should be cleaned <strong>on</strong> a daily basis;<br />

• baffle type self draining filters <strong>and</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong> drawers should be cleaned<br />

weekly as a minimum. The cleaning period for mesh filters should be at least<br />

twice a week;<br />

• cleaning period for extract ductwork are used as follows:<br />

Heavy Use 12-16 Hours Per Day 3 M<strong>on</strong>thly<br />

Moderate Use 6-12 Hours Per Day 6 M<strong>on</strong>thly<br />

Light Use 2-6 Hours Per Day Annually<br />

• periodic ‘deep hygiene cleaning’ be undertaken by a specialist c<strong>on</strong>tractor. All<br />

accessible main ductwork runs <strong>and</strong> branches, including fitted equipment<br />

should be inspected <strong>and</strong> cleaned. [Note: periodic will be defined by <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

equipment];<br />

• all fans are maintained <strong>on</strong> a regular basis as recommended by <strong>the</strong> fan<br />

manufacturer; <strong>and</strong><br />

• ventilati<strong>on</strong> grilles, where fitted have easily removable cores to facilitate<br />

cleaning.<br />

Recommendati<strong>on</strong>s for maintenance <strong>of</strong> odour c<strong>on</strong>trol system<br />

For a system employing fine filtrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> carb<strong>on</strong> filtrati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

• Change fine filters every two weeks<br />

• Change carb<strong>on</strong> filters every 4 to 6 m<strong>on</strong>ths<br />

For a system employing ESP <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in line abatement systems:<br />

• Clean every 2-6 m<strong>on</strong>ths<br />

4.11.3 Maintenance Activities<br />

A range <strong>of</strong> cleaning techniques are available <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are summarised in Tables 5.1<br />

<strong>and</strong> 5.2.<br />
